id trade enroth. he is too small and five hole is always open. - LizzyJo
(shrug) I think he might be a decent goalie in the league but I'm more than happy to trade him if we're upgrading somewhere else. I'm more inclined to keep him as he has been a very good backup for us and we've had a history of not having good backups since Marty left (once again, Lindy can be blamed for much of this).

Stall would be nice, but not for that. I'd imagine the Pens will shop this offseason for takers, but since he'll be a UFA I don't know about a team giving up a lot to make him the #1 guy. i think he can be that guy, on the right team, but unless he signs an immediate extension why risk it? I doubt they would shop him at the deadline, unless it was a very nice pick up, but bottom line they can not afford him after next year especially if the cap goes down (if thats the case I'd imagine you'll see them try and shop a few others as well).
I'd wait to jump on the wagon at the end of next year, but dangling a position they need and a mid draft pick this offseason isn't a bad idea either - bberkey1

i dont think he was that good, he started off great and then sucked the rest of the way. he lost his game. maybe keep him for one season but he will never be a starter here, ever. but say we are going after a very good player, i wouldn't hesitate to offer him up. just my opinion on him.

Enroth to Chi for Dave Bolland. Maybe 1st round swaps. I want Bolland here, people in Chicago think they are shopping him. I would love our centers to be Hodgson/Ennis/Bolland.

disagree
it's a cap era, he is a cheap contract and has room for growth
look at his stats vs millers stats at that age, and miller was on a much better team
hell look at his stats in the last 14 months vs miller's stats in the last 14 months
it's easier for a great goaltending coach to fix 5 hole then constantly being out of position and pouting on the bench
if anyone really thinks the Sabres can compete for the cup next year, maybe and that is a stretch
it is not in the sabres best position moving forward for the next few years to move enroth IMO

It's a tough call but let's face it, Enroth will not be the starter here while Darcy and Lindy are around, His value is fairly high right now (young, small cap hit) Miller can play 55 games a year, we can find a guy who can start the other 25. Why wait and risk losing Enroth for nothing. He wont play in the playoffs, IMO he's not a franchise goalie, but could net us a pretty fair return. I say deal him if you can get something good.

No point in trading Enroth, he's a decent backup and has no trade value. No GM in the league buys him as a solution in goal.

Ok, so what do you think you'd get back for him then? - nfph
Depends.... Semyon Varlamov got a 1st and 2nd round pick with 27 games experience. if there is a gm who believes Enroth can start 40 games or so, he can get a decent return.

Varlamov has prototypical NHL goalie size and was himself a 1st round pick. He was also a starter at the tim, albeit with limited experience.
Enroth is the shortest goalie in the league, shows it, and still gets beat in the smallest 5-hole there is consistently. He was a 2nd round pick.
Varlamovs numbers were also considerably better than Enroths.
Finally, that was a widely criticized trade at the time.
My take, you'd be extremely fortunate to recoup that 2nd round pick from Enroth, and then you'd have to find a new backup.

Bishop is 6'7" - nfph
There have been plenty of tall goalies who suck... size doesnt mean anything. As far as the Varlamov trade, whether it was criticized or not the trade was made and it paid off for COL, he has been very good, and Varlamov was 23rd overall, not that far off from Enroth, he wasnt a top 10 pick. Goalies who can actually play are hard to find, Enroths sample size is small but he has proved he can play in the NHL, maybe not for 40-50 games but if someone thinks he can, we can get a good prospect or a decent package with him included IMO.

And there have been very few small ones that haven't sucked in the modern era, is more my point.
When Enroth goes down into a butterfly, compared to Miller who is 6'3, he Gives up 5 inches above his shoulder. You extrapolate that to the angle he's trying to cut off and I completely disagree with you that 'size doesn't mean anything'
And there's just no way you get a very good prospect for Enroth. He projects as a career backup.

Read these blogs, and local papers last year when Miller was hurt. He was very good. He had a record of 11-2 at one point. Who exactly projects him as a career backup?? I think it is unfair to suggest he is a career backup, people wanted Miller traded and Enroth starting remember?? I personally dont think Enroth is a franchise goalie, but Is it out of the relm of possibility that he would be good in a 1/2 punch role??

I'm sorry, but I'm here all the time, and while I love each and every poster on here like a brother or sister, citing this forum as evidence if what a paid NHL GM should do doesn't exactly convince me. I.e. we say really stupid stuff on here all the time.
Hey, if we could get an asset for the guy great. I just don't think we will, for the reasons I bring up.

interesting goalie conversation
1 thing I would like to add before I go into hiding for 6 hours is the following
Not many goalies in todays NHL can play 65 games a year or stretches of 23 out of 25 games, and play it well.
Miller broke down and was average for his last 4 starts, good vs the flyers but brutal in the 2 leaf games. This is a coaching issue IMO
the year we won the presidents trophy, millers play faded at the end
the year miller won the vezina, his play faded down the stretch
last year enroth, a fresher goalie, won the deciding games to get us in the post season
I doubt it is a focus thing but more of a fact that there are not many hank's, quick's out there and you see those few elite goalies playing stellar even now moving deep into the playoffs
and the monster is big and sucks and there are some small goalies that can play well
to quote a few of my male friends down here and their unhappy wives "size does not matter"
