Thought today: No Carle, No Suter, No Dennis Wideman
How about a defenseman that plays 2-3 minutes of PK a night, never takes stupid penalties, would be among our leaders in hits and blocked shots, and has a bomb from the point which he utlizes on the PP with great success. He's under 30 and we could have him for perhaps less than 2/3 what we'd pay for Carle or Wideman.

Problem I have with him is he a one year wonder? He wouldn't exactly lead us in hits or blocked shots either, he would however be steady at both.
He would bring the offense, but I can't bring myself to pay him 5mil over 5 years.
Allen would be a good option outside the offense though. |

Honestly i think Garrison will get around 4.5 mill
Brian Allen? Yeah he's a legit shut down dman... would look good with a younger dman as his partner too. Help show him the ropes. |

I know the price for dmen is big this year, but would he really command that much? I think we could get him wrapped up for 3.5-4 over 4 if we pursued him hard on July 1st. |

Rumor had it that he was asking 4 or 4.5 from Florida.
Whether he gets that or not is a different story.
Even 4 years at 4mil is it worth it if he loses the offense? Maybe, but most likely not. Then again who knows what Allen costs and for how long. |

He was always described as an offensive dman. The fact that he rounded out his game and has just recently found his offensive stroke is encouraging imo. If he was flash in the pan offensively, he wouldn't be totally useless. He would be overpaid though, I suppose. So it's a risk. And I probably wouldn't go for him at 4.5 or plus.
It's not the (close to) sure thing that Suter would be, but it's also more feasible and affordable. |

It is risky to sign a potential 1 year wonder. We got foster after a 42 point season in Tampa. Is garrison a late bloomer or another foster? Is it worth tying up cap space to find out? I wouldn't object to signing him but I'd maybe prefer carle. However we do have the ability to get him ice time and picks through our improved pp. I'd love to mention Suter but no way he signs with the oilers. |

It's really a tough call. The 2011-12 Garrison is exactly what we need going forward. |

The difference was Foster was on a fairly cheap and moveable contract. Foster's contract to this day wasn't a bad one in my opinion. Sure it never panned out, but the risk was low and potential reward was high.
Unfortunately I don't see Garrison signing a 2 year deal in Edmonton. |

We've got 21 million committed through next offseason (Hall and Eberle payday). Let's assume we want to keep Whitney, Jones and Smid as well.
We could still have enough room to give Garrison a Hemskyesque payday (2 years. 5 million) if we were so inclined. I don't think it's a wise move though. |

You got that right. EDM will not win the Suter, Carle, or Wideman sweepstakes. I also suggest Garrison or Carliacovo, or Campoli for short term contracts. EDM got to be patient. If Garrison asks for the world of payday, EDM will also pass and just one day trade a big asset for what the team needs. |

I am not so sure that EDM is not one of the top choices to sign up for this upcoming season.... I mean clearly we are not the same team we were in the heatly -hossa proposal timeframe... I honestly can see some players wanting to play for team with a bright future and potential state of the art barn to play in...Essentially Katz is building it and its going to come... |

I think we need to actually show that the potential means something before the big fish start coming here. |

Too bad Souray was such a douche... once again he would be a good compliment to what we need in the offensive dman dept... |

EDM might have a chance to acquire Stewart. STL is a cap stingy team. As Hockey News posted, STL will need to upgrade the offense next season in order to compete better than this year. If owners in STL doesn't wanna spend alot, well, got to move least productive assets out. Resigning Stewart to a one year giving him another shot doesn't hurt for STL, EDM will have to be aggressive to pry him out. |

possibly... but if you are offered the same money from 4 or 5 teams... Edm has a few perks and some great potential... the old vets that want the moon and stars we are not ready for anyway... but a player in their 20-mid 20s for a specific role should be interested... or one would think... |

Belanger, 2nd and a prospect is what I'd go. Belanger would most likely fit in well with Hitch |
