Two options (#1 we trade, #1 we sign UFA). But I guess it can also be positioned as 3.

I'd take Nash if the price is right...I think we'll be able to get him for a discount if Howsen gets desperate enough.

I'd also take Penner but only if the price is right. I'm afraid his play in the playoffs will probably drive up his tag to the point where we shouldn't sign him...

- Pen15

I don't know if I'd even take Nash if the price was right. Unless he's playing on the 2nd line, no thanks. I want to keep Lupul and Kessel together.

Ya that wont happen.

depends on the moves made this opffseason.. but its a long stretch.. reliable goaltending is probably the number one priority.

then size up front.

What do you think we'd have to give up to get Lindback or Bernier?
- Pen15

Mac and a 2nd....or a prospect and a 2nd.
Of course I would prefer Reimer and 2nd...but..wont happen.

So by signing a 30 year old, lazy, "power forward", who would probably play between 12 and 15 minutes a night, the Leafs would no longer get pushed around on a nightly basis?

That's an incredible impact Penner must have. To play 15 minutes and yet still intimidate the other team for the other 45 minutes.

- Unholy_Goalie

He's currently making an impact for the Kings in the playoffs....playing very well actually...but I guess things like showing up when it matters doesn't really matter in your books...

I really don't see these two as a great improvement, I think some are overvaluing their worth like some overvalue ours.

Given the context of a shallow goaltending field, I highly doubt Nash or LA go for that...

Keep in mind, they'll be fielding offers from 29 NHL teams...that'll undoubtedly drive the price up.

By the time April 15th 2013 rolls around...we should have a pretty assessment of what kind of team they'll be....next year.

Penner is going to be really effective in the playoffs for the Leafs, especially when he does nothing to actually get them there and they miss the playoffs. But he'll still be great in the playoffs.

I doubt 29 other teams really would be interested in those 2....as at least 10 of long term starting goalies.

I wouldn't pay more than that.

So you're going to base your judgement off of one year's performance vs. Nash's proven track record his entire career of being a #1 winger that produces with poop as linemates?

I love the logic around trading for Bernier/Bishop/Lindback....

Its the type of logic that said moving steen and collaicovo for stempniak was a good idea....

Lindbacks career numbers
Total NHL 38 16 13 2 1923 81 940 2.53 .914 2

Bernier's career numbers
Total NHL 48 20 17 5 2691 112 1247 2.50 .910 5

Reimer's career numbers
Total NHL 71 34 24 9 3959 187 2108 2.83 .911 6

Why do you all keep going to where he was picked? How does a players current performance have anything to do with where he got picked?

And Kuli has only ever scored 30 once...so if that will be your definition of a 30 goal scorer I'd say it's flawed. A 30 goal scorer in my books is someone you can depend to get 30 consistently....like a Kessel...

EDIT: And the reason why I like Lindback is that I think given his frame and size, he'd do very well under Allaire's style.

- Pen15

Ok fine, but Lindback isn't currently performing better than Reimer... so your point is moot.

I don't see Bernier as much...but given Allaire's style, and Linbacks size and athletism...I think they can make magic happen.

To be fair, it is Option 2.

Here's what I would do:

Goaltending:
Option 1: Trade for Lindback/Bernier (give up Schenn/Franson + Mac/Kuli)
Option 2: Sign a veteran back up & give Reimer another shot

Power Forward:
Option 1: Trade for Nash/JVR (give up Schenn/Franson + Mac/Kuli + 2nd rounder/Colborne/Kadri
Option 2: Sign Dustin Penner for cheaper than what he makes now

#1 Centre:
Draft Galenchuk

Don't we have a Lindback type in Rynnas?
