Considering where he would be in the lineup, that is ridiculous.

On the third line and likely still seeing power-play time here and there? Thats about right, especially with so many kids on ELC

I had not heard that.

I don't think 3.25 mil is all that ridiculous, but this is where it gets confusing to me.

If Smyth truly wants to be here, which is the impression I am making this argument under, then a deal should have been done by now.

If the Oilers have been fair to him and he is making this more about money, then that's a different story. If he keeps upping his price to try and squeeze every penny out of him, that's a little bit ridiculous.

- mochoson

He was offered a Bertuzzi-like deal. Bert has a 2.25 per deal. Like I said if Smyth came back and counter-offered for 2.5 I bet the team does not hesitate to sign.

The team offered a fair and reasonable price and he high balled them.

That is where most see him...I think that is not where he sees himself though. I think he stills thinks he is a shoe in for 2nd line duty with 1st unit PP and 1st unit PK.

Smyth basically held Tambi hostage last year when he demanded a trade back to Edmonton publicly, if Tambi doesnt get that deal done, he's public enemy #1.

Oilers owe Smyth nothing and if he wants to nickle and dime at this point in his career to play for this rebuilding team, he can walk... seeya.

*cries*

I wouldn't be surprised if they're hashing out what seems like a very complicated matter.

Issues:

1) Smyth feels he's worth at least Bertuzzi money (probably more) and wants a long term. Maybe long enough to be around when we're competetive.
2) Tambs doesn't want a large cap hit, but probably doesn't care about salary too much (comparatively).
3) Tambs can't afford to have Smyth retire and have the cap hit stay on the books.

If I had to guess, they're trying to hammer out exactly how much longer Smyth intends to play, and what the contract or contracts will look like. For example, they could be negotiating one big contract for next year, with the promise a longer, smaller contract in the future. I'd imagine that takes time.

1) He was offered Bertuzzi-like money. Countered with a contract worth 1mil more.
2) I can agree, nor should he want a large cap hit to extend past this year with the kids coming into the first full contract.
3) The terms agreed from my understanding is 2 years.

So the term is agreed by both sides...and it is reasonable. Unless he is getting 6 mil per his cap hit should not be an issue.

it all comes down to $$$. Team offered 2.25 approx...Smyth counters with 3.25. He thinks he is worth more than Bertuzzi and Hedjuk. If the magic # is 2.5 to him then why ask for so much more...why not just ask for 2.5. The team will see that is still reasonable and just sign.

I didn't hear anything about both sides wanting a two year term. In fact I haven't heard anything about the offer/counter stuff either...but if that's the case, they should just settle for 4.5 mil first year and league minimum next.

Every team has to overpay slightly here and there to keep players.

2.5 million for Smyth isn't an overpayment. It's not even close.

- mochoson

I'd offer 3 years, 3.5 mil, 2.5 mil, 1.5 mil, and his jersey in the rafters. I think that's both fair and generous.

I sure hope this is what's happening. Two groups of reasonable adults professionally negotiating a potential complication. (crosses fingers).

Sure, but but he is not top line...not even 2nd line material anymore...he is getting closer to 4th line/special teams material than top 6.

Laughs may take the the hateraide a little thick but he makes a point...Smyth made a big deal to get out of LA to come home to finish his career...if he really wants to squabble over less than halfmil after the team paid him an exaggerated salary for 1 year to have him on the team then he can pack up for a year and play in Calgary.

Smyth is no minute muncher...

2011-12 Forwards
The only forward to play all 82 games.
5th most ES minutes per game
4th most PK minutes per game
5th most PP minutes per game
2nd most Total minutes per game

Most total minutes played 1525
Horcoff second 1520

- Seldom Beaton[Horcoff missed one game]
Eberle 3rd at 1322

Of the regulars, only Hemsky & Horcoff had tougher match-ups

This was hardly influenced on performance ESP after Xmas... More so on Renney either being stupid or told to tank...

I just don't understand how the guy could be so emotional about coming back, and when he does come back, request more than comparable players throughout the league are receiving. It stinks of dog sh1t to me.

Anyway, for the average worker, 10k will mean A LOT more to them then 100k does to $myth. $myth has more than enough money to live comfortably... The average worker usually requests higher wages so they can afford the cost of living.

after rescuing him from LA at his request and paying him his 6+mil last year for non-20goal, 46 point season I think he can stand to take the hit.

This isn't about Katz. The owner's financial status has zero to do with this. This is about $myth.
