Definitely the kind of guy Lindy likes on the ice with two minutes left when we're down by one.

Guys we are talking about the same guy who drafted Andrew Peters 34th (137 picks before Datsyuk) so im alarmed he didnt trade up.

Seems that with the draft being pretty weak the pick trade is the route I like.

you should also note that datsyuk was passed over four times by each team including detroit

There were 171 guys taken before Datsyuk. No GM in the league saw that coming.

one of them did...some guy by the name of ken holland

Datsyuk is a well known diamond in the rough story. Peters was a bust. One has nothing to do with the other.

GMs get too much credit at the draft table, sometimes.

Look at the scouts who put their name on the line who go to their Head Scout and GM and literally argue over why to draft certain players.

Datsyuk and Zetterberg are Hakan Andersson picks.

Always wonder do they just develope guys really well or are they just lucky or what. Are the bad teams bad cause they just can't develope guys?

Im sure Detroit does a very nice job developing players but you cant develop the raw skill that each of them has. Fact is when they were drafted the scouting in Europe was limited. If every team devoted resources to Europe the way they do now Datsyuk and Zetterberg would have been no worse than 2nd round picks.

He was drafted to fizzle out in less than half a decade? Interesting.

Holland even admitted that they were long shots, but that's the type of guys they target late. Guys who have superstar talent, but that will get passed because the odds of them making it just aren't high. One of those guys was like 130lbs when drafted, who the hell would've thought to take a 130lb guy.

Andersson is pretty well known as the be-all and end-all of European scouting now. It's gotten to the point that Detroit gave him his own staff and put him in charge of European Scouting, both pro and amateur. Most European scouts just work under the Director of Amateur Scouting.

Tommie Bergmann is another good European scout-- Tomas Kaberle, Viktor Stalberg, Carl Gunnarsson, etc. all in the 6th round or later.

I think you would be a little schoked if you looked at the numbers of the amount of players who play longer than 6 seasons in the NHL. Plus take out the strike year plus the change in the game after the strike

I'd like to know if Frank Musil is really the guy we have doing the work in Europe.

Thanks! I love D coming out of the USNDTP. If anyone is going to be a heavy sleeper you would think it would be someone stuck behind Trouba, Skjei, and Jones.

Seems like the Sabres had some good European influence during the 90's then once the 2000's hit seems like they just stopped.
