It seems to me that Gagner may be a good asset, far better than his reputation. The larger question is why has his image suffered. Do you think the problem is more about Edmonton fans and media constantly promoting his being shipped out of town? If you keep putting an item on sale and there are no buyers the price will be reduced. Perhaps it is time to stop trying to push this sale for awhile and the value might actually increase. - spatso
Gagner is good, but Oiler fans have been spoiled by the likes of Hall, Eberle, and RNH. Some Oiler fans suggest trading Gagner, because he has value, and can be traded for something that we need... D.
Anyway, Oilers management has stated that Gagner is in their long-term plans. Just because some fans on here mention his name in possible trade scenarios, that does not mean he's actually being shopped... The "no buyers" thing you mentioned makes zero sense. If the Oilers were shopping him, nobody here would know if there were any buyers until the trade was complete. |

whats wrong with what he said? he is slightly undersized... and yes he could get 70 like you say but since his totals have gone something like 49,41,42,42,47 (with an 8 point single game which yes he did do but you cant count on that happening every year) its more realistic that with better players he hits 55 points this year which is an average 2nd-good 3rd line center - DarcyTucker16

I don't know why everyone's so pre-occupied with Gagner's point totals (specifically, that he hasn't "improved" offensively). Like the 5.5 million dollar man we already have at centre, if you stick Gags with the talented wingers we're bringing in, he'll get his 50-60 points.
He played about a third of the season really stepping up his defensive game. I dunno that he's gonna be Stephen Weiss, but if everyone just shut up about how he isn't scoring like the other kids, they'd realize that he's going to be a pretty decent little 2nd line centre by the time we are competitive. |

so that would put him around an average 2nd line centre or a good 3rd line centre on a stacked team... is that not what i said? - DarcyTucker16

That should read 2nd line on a cup contender, 1st line on most every other team. A team like St Louis has a bunch of 55 point guys only. New Jersey went to the cup final with a legitimate 1st line guy, a 50 point rookie, and pretty much nothing else in terms of centre output. |

This....
In other news that stupid Souray is back at it again:
"If the recent report is accurate that Sheldon Souray has rejected a one-year, $3 million contract offer from the Stars, it is a puzzling decision by the veteran defenseman"
Nothing like continuing the trend of cutting the hand that feeds you... what a dumb bastard... bet he thinks LA will sign him... |

It will be interesting to see what Gagner actually gets paid this offseason... - saskoil21
According to a couple of Leaf fans on here, he'll get 600k |

I think he will get a 2 or 3 year deal near the 4ish mill mark IMO... |

Well, in my books a 2nd and a b+ prospect (especially if the prospect has recent 1st round pedigree - though that seems to count less for you) is worth the same as a 1st.
Teams don't usually trade at the draft unless it's for acquiring draft picks. You could see a team in the late first trading down to acquire a 2nd draft pick. Gagner + our 2nd might get a later 1st in that regard. But I agree, most of the players that get traded at the draft are even less notable than Gagner... - Morris

The guy who posted that must think there's 16 teams in the NHL... This Gagner hate is so ridiculous. |

Don't get me wrong, I think it'd be a totally useless move to package him for a 1st at this juncture, especially if it was a low first. |

Not disagreeing, because there's always the hope of hitting one out of the park with a pick that high... That being said, guess what? Gagner was a #6 overall and we're happy with how he has preformed... We're more than happy to keep him, and we wouldn't be caught dead trading the guy for a late first rounder. |

I understand all of that. But it doesnt change the fact that a late first rounder is probably what he is worth. |

A little dose of reality!
Its easy to get caught up in debates and forget that our opinions dont actually matter.
I can bang the drum all day on tradings gags! But its not real! Its just what some fan would do--- does this lower his theoretical HB value?
And That also doesnt mean hes actually being shopped.
No one actually knows what the oilers plans really are. |

Straight up thats probably very close to what another team would offer under ordinary circumstances.
But hes worth more than that to the oil, so they probably wouldnt go for it |

Completely incorrect, and I don't care who disagrees with me. You're overvaluing late first round picks. Of course there is the odd later pick that turns out being a stud, but 9 times out of 10 they do not equal the quality of Gagner... I'm not willing to take chance on that.
I should add... There is added value in later round picks, because of the POSSIBILITY of lucking out and getting an Eberle. In reality, this actually makes later first round picks more valuable than they actually are. It's kind of like buying a lotto ticket. But if we take away this element of hope, Gagner actually >>>>> a late first round pick. I guess it all depends on how much value you place on hope... Regardless, I'm sure the Oilers are more than happy with Gagner, and see his value as more than a late first round pick. |

Yeah, no kidding... That's the equivalent of basing trade value on EA's NHL2012 trading system. |
