I know I know, typical leafs fan here, but if he were available in a trade like that, I would easily give up our first next year, our second this year and two mediocre players for parise and hedberg if parise signs a contract upon arriving. It would be stupid not to. I hope Burke doesn't let this slide by, love Parise always have. Bring on the hate. |

This is an insane amount to give up for the rights to a UFA even if he is Parise. I don't think i've ever seen a price that high.
All the NJ fans should be celebrating if that is the case because in a week and a half he's going to be gone for nothing. |

its not for his rights... Its for him because according to the rumors its based on a deal of 49 mill over 7 years being agreed upon... so in that case its a ridiculous underpayment |

Yes but if NJ didn't agree to this deal they would be losing him for nothing and Colorado would sign him on July 1 for nothing....it's not like the Devils retain his rights if they don't agree to the deal. If the don't have the financial flexibility to sign him that's an amazing return for them. |

It's not like they are trading for a signed player. They could get him for nothing (money aside) in just over a week. - J-Dog
did you not read the article... is based on him signed the 49 mill over 7 year contract... so in that case it is for a signed player |

the thing i dont understand is if im going to sign in colorado... why would i make them give up assets for me? id rather go there for free and keep those assets to help my team prosper
if im parise i owe the devils nothing. They wanted to build around kovalchuk so im just letting them |

if you think NJs Gm would give them the ability to negotiate a contract before the trade without the undestanding that you are now paying full value for parise your nuts |

Still would rather have the money. Neither do anything for me at all. - Kovaltron
You would think that most teams would be able to offer up picks for his rights without having to unload a contract as well. Maybe not all but most. |

Yes I get that...but NJ would have let Colorado negotiate with him for the return that they were getting because they knew they couldn't sign them, therefore they are getting a 1st and 2nd round pick for basically nothing because they would have known they were losing him. They wouldn't let Colorado or any other team negotiate with him if they thought they could still sign him.

They aren't going to give up picks like a 1st and 2nd rounder unless they know he's going to sign. So basically the only team that will give that much is the team that Zach chooses. |

I'm saying that it's a good return because if they are shopping his right they obviously know that he's not coming back. You have to look at the whole picture here. If my team knew they were losing a player i'd be happy as hell if they got a 1st and 2nd round pick. |

Agreed but who's to say it would have to be a 1st or 2nd? If I'm Lou and I know Zach isn't signing under any circumstances, why not even take a 4th and 5th for example? I would agree in not taking on contracts you don't want, but free picks are free picks. |
