Cam Fowler and Claude Giroux say "hi"
Also Chris Kreider. Im sure i could go on.
Everyone had Maata going top 13. - FLYERSROCK!
Claude Giroux was considered a reach when he was drafted. He was "too small" but the Flyers believed in Simon Nolet who believed in Claude. |

Who did you think they were going to take? - stveshdy
Maatta of course when he fell into their laps. They could have traded way down and likely been able to draft Laughton.

Well its already slated in as 3rd, since G and Couts will be #1 and #2.
Couldve got that not miss prospect in Maata. Decided to pass.
Just frustrated. Ill be fine tomorrow. Im getting my frustration in now instead of when it happened. - FLYERSROCK!
Who says that Maata is can't miss? Usually can't miss players are taken higher.

I thought after the trade with Bob and only have two goals on the AHL roster they would go with Subban. |

agreed, but based on his profile and our needs, I'd feel better w/ maata. w/ homer though, his track record in the 1st is stellar. |

I've gotta trust the Flyers with this pick. They have a pretty good track record when it comes to late first round picks. - 77rams
Yeah, majority of these guys are lottery tickets, very few can't miss guys outside the top 10 or so.
The strategy of best available player is one I agree with, but in this instance Maatta filled a need, and by all "experts" accounts was the better talent.
Obviously only time will tell how this pans out, no way to quantify it now. |

I don't necessarily have a problem with the Madden comparison. Madden was a winner plain and simple - I do believe a three time cup winner. I'm not really concerned where the Flyers pick-up winning talent just as long as they continue to find it. - ravishingone
I don't have a problem with John Madden. Just pointing out that teams don't select players in the first round with the "upside" of John Madden. So do you put your faith in the Flyers scouts, or an unnamed NHL front office person? |

Laughton is probably two or three years away from the NHL. May be one of the most competitive and smartest players in this draft.

if that's all the kid becomes that's seriously poor value - isaiah520
I respect your opinion, but I do believe this pick just leads to other doors that will be opened this offseason. I honestly know nothing about Laughton, he could turn out to be better then Maata, possibly worse. However, I'm convinced more then ever the Flyers will trade for a d-man. |

Generally not a great strategy to draft goaltenders in the first round. I didn't want them to go in that direction. |

The Penguins are "looking into" trading for Ryan Suter's rights, according to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review. General manager Ray Shero has been all over the map Friday night. First, he sends Jordan Staal to the Hurricanes in a draft-day blockbuster, then rumors surface that Pittsburgh will pursue Zach Parise if the Devils can't lock him up. The Penguins are also said to be shopping defenseman Paul Martin, who is due to make $5 million, so that would free up cap space in addition to the Staal move. Up to this point, the Predators haven't seemed willing to move Suter's rights, but perhaps an enticing package could make them change their minds.

only a couple of this yrs Dmen were ready to step in anyway. the point is that the org depth on d and in goal is wanting.
I def think the flyers will add a significant dman on or before July 1. |

yeah, but if risk becomes a contract headache they could have flexibility. notice that BOS is committed to having top shelf goalie options. |
