How are we feeling about our brand new pick up? - Schenn2shine
We're feeling...how should I say this....
Skeptical. Not because of his talent- he seems like a gamer. Does whatever it takes to win and is a big, athletic body. Good 2 way play, forechecking, and offensive upside. But I think we're skeptical because we feel like we could have addressed the glaring organizational hole at defense by picking Maatta.
The other side of the story being that we're not scouts, and we don't know the real reason Maatta slid almost 20 slots. Add the fact that the O&B have drafted very well in the 20s as well as Homer having one hell of an eye for talent, Mr. Laughton could be a pleasant surprise. Only time will tell.
I like it i think this kid is going to be a fan favorite....not the highest offensive ceiling but a good hard working kid thats going to have an impact. - Philly1980
see, this bothers me though. Claude Giroux, Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier, Nick Cousins and now Scott Laughton. I don't know who the best player was at the point of the 20th pick but this was a defense heavy draft and we could use that sort of help in this area. Bill warned us that the Flyers will take the best player at our point in the draft but I'm noticing we took a grinder type in a position we're loaded in.

I just hope this isn't the end of Schenn.
It'd be a HUGE mistake dealing him.... - Giroux_Is_God
I'm hoping the same. If this pick leads to something much bigger, we'd be losing a solid young player for something we could have drafted for free. We really helped out the Jackets today by heading Bob but we probably could have simply moved up by dangling our first round pick and Bob as a package. The writing was on the wall for Bob, so why not go up words?

My opinion is Jvr+schenn are getting dealt for D(weber would be the only trade i include schenn in), because i hate to say it but when was the last time the flyers had a home grown defenseman. Once danny retire/not re signed Couts moves up and this kid takes third line....

absolutely. they're saying that this kid was clearly better than anybody else on the board...so much so that they had to ignore glaring org needs. I'm skeptical based on the #'s and mainly by what I've read. if we weren't so stocked inthe middle and the other needs were not so great, I'd feel much better. not a make-or-break though...

Then where does Nick Cousins fits in? To be honest, I would also package Cousins for something much bigger.

I think he'll be a winger in NHL, probably 3rd line. Someone compared him to Brad Marchand. Apart from skating (a big issue mind you), that's a real good comparison.

Bill- I know you can't really answer this for sure, but what do you think is Schenner's fate with (EAGLES REFERENCE COMING UP HERE LADIES AND GENTS) the new kid in town??
EDIT: I also think we could be making something out of nothing. Just because we drafted a C doesn't mean Schenn is as good as gone. If he was the best available, he was the best available. And if he's not NHL ready for a few seasons, why would we deal Schenn now to make room for a question mark in 3-4 seasons??
Laughton represented Canada at the 2011 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and scored the game-winning goal in the gold-medal game. He also won gold with Team Ontario at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Holmgren compared Laughton to Adam Henrique, hence they think he was best available player at that point while teams that see a future John Madden (still quite valuable) had others higher on their list. Player himself said he plays in Mike Richards mold. - bmeltzer
I'll take that any day.
Hopefully this kid wears his hats straight though.
I really like what I heard and saw in that clip. Richards and Doan. Two way player. Heart and soul. I'll take it. He kinda reminds me a bit of Cody Hodgson.
His hat was almost perfectly straight too. Sooo close. For not having a mirror handy I'll say darn good on him.
