This Laughton guy is tough as nails. His highlight reel on the flyers site was a blocked shot. The future leader of our bottom 6 group, looks the part, acts it. I like the pick. |

How long until some start calling the new kid LOLton. I hope he pans out. |

Homer has shocked us all before but in a draft that is so loaded with defenseman (an area where we need help in) and we take a forward, this disappointments me. Plus you can't say that the UFA market is strong this year with defense either. I suppose it's better to be skeptical then disappointed but I guess I'll have to wait and see. |

Homer's got something cooking. The pick essentially just made Schenn available. If that doesnt get you Weber nothing will. That's the only explanation for this pick and it might have just been a stroke of genius on Homer's part.
Dont forget also, they need Defense now. Drafting a Dman last night likely wasnt going to help us all that much for the next 2 years at the minimum. |

Apparently Laughton is 2-3 years away from playing in the NHL. So I don't know that the pick makes Schenn available.

Imo, this pick has nothing to do with Schenn. Schenn will be a winger this year.
G
Briere
Coots
At some point, Coots will replace Briere. This kid could slide to 3, but even 3 years from now he will be really young. |

Yandle/Weber: know nothing about it; Nash, Flyers deal wasn't enough; Ryan: wants out of ANA, stay tuned, Flyers won't give up 10 or 14.

having had a nite to sleep on it, there's no doubt in my mind that we will likely regret that the flyers didn't draft a dman or a goalie. there's no way that this kid is so far and away better than prospects at positions of crying need, imo. time will tell the tale, of course... |

Do you think Holmgren has doubts about the pick after sleeping on it?

They don't draft by need. According to what many think the Flyers draft philosophy is, even if Laughton was a tiny hair better than the next guy they like, they take Laughton. He didn't need to be far and away better than other prospects. They may end up with defensemen the rest of the draft, and there are good D-men taken after the 1st round. |

Finn and thrower are both still on the board, and I'd rather take them with a second round pick than reach for them with a first rounder.
If dansk is still there at 45, id take him though. |

I don't see this kid being that much better than maata at this stage of the 1st rnd. this is not couts vs Hamilton. you can't arbitrarily draft the kid who's better by a hair if the need is that great and the coffers are that stocked up front. the flyers have nothing but marginal 3rd pairing guys on d in their system and it's been that way for so many yrs. in turn, the team has had to make trades for dmen that cost more than they had to. it's tough to always be chasing your tail... |

he might be thinking that he hopes he didn't miss out on a goalie or a dman, for sure. there's no question that players were rated very closely at that spot, but I guess laughton's the one he obviously didn't want to lose sleep over. if maata is evn a poor mans kimmo, it'll sting. |

Well, that's exactly what the Flyers do. They compile a list, before the draft starts, of the players they like the most in an order. And obviously Laughton was above Maatta on their list. I assume at that point, Laughton was the highest guy on their list that wasn't taken, so that's who they took. The Flyers didn't spend much time talking about the pick at their table before they went up. They've done this every season I can remember paying attention to the draft. I don't understand why this is a surprise to anyone.
And did the Flyers honestly overpay for Coburn, Carle, and Meszaros? |

Man do I hope you are wrong. I am against giving up jvr unless it is for weber. I love jvr but I love schenn even more. I would start to look towards voracek |

^ he stole coburn, traded away downie (who was never going to make it as a flyer) for carle, and somehow got tampa to take emminger for meszaros.
Each time, Homer made out like a bandit. |

How many times have you seen Laughton play? The Flyers have a host of Professional talent evaluators employed by them. They took who they felt is the better player. None of us are qualified to say who's better and who's not, compared to the people who made that call. I'm gonna let the kid be Flyers property for at least 24 hours before criticizing the move. And the 2nd round of the draft hasn't started. The Draft is not over.

I doubt it. They took who they wanted to pick. And the obviously had reasons for making that choice.

and the flyers future on d is what? as shero said last night "you can never have enuf d". add to that d prospects have greater value once they're considered nhl ready.
re C, C, & M we did fairly well...esp coburn, but since dmen are at a premium, most teams end up overpaying like COL did for Johnson, DAL did for gogo and we did for pronger...and likely we will this yr. |
