1) Start with the capgeek amount of available open cap space ($11,481,627)
2) Subtract Carle re-signing and call it a $4.75 M cap hit
3) Subtract Voracek re-signing and call it a $3.0 M cap hit
4) Subtract backup goalie and call it an $800,000 cap hit
5) Subtract Bourdon resigning and call it $1M
6) Subtract Sestito re-signing and call it about $650,000
That leaves team with $1,281,627 under the cap -- which they will need to exceed to re-sign Jagr or find a comparable replacement -- before you figure in Pronger's LTIR cap allowance (which would amount to about $3.61 million of usable cap space). - bmeltzer

what do you think they'd want for him? - JoeRussomanno
prob one of our dmen. they might take a combo of gusty/ bourdon and cousins, but they are loaded w/ forward prospects, so I dunno. Stewart has almost as much talent as JVR, but he's more physical. dunno where his head is at, but we could use the snarl for sure, cause we're looking a little small again. |

Well, you need some puck moving types on a team and the UFA market for them is thin this year, so Carle's value, just like Wideman and Garrison's is inflated. If it was more a buyers market for these types of players, I'd say we could likely swap out for a lower $$ D man for that spot...however, the market being what it is, Carle is at $4.5 mil is worth retaining. But again, is Carle really doing anything special or unique to Carle that is keying the Flyers offense? Something that would show he's not so much a product of a strong offensive team but rather a main cause of it ? I'm not sure he brings that kind of game to the table. - phantasm
Why not just get an average puck mover in then, as you said earlier. That an average puck mover can do the same as Carle. Carle is going to get paid due to the player he is. And Carle is far better then average at moving the puck. He's very good at it. And quality puck movers are in demand in this League.

Just to further clarify, you had asked another poster "Any idea why the Coaches play him 23-25 minutes a game"? in your post defending Carle. The reality is this season Carle drew top overall TOI for the Flyers for the first time since he was acquired, and it was largely due to injury issues rather than due to coaches preference...even so, it was only avg. 23:01 mins/gm, not 23-25 mins (does every Carle stat get inflated in your mind?).
In prior seasons, when the D corps was healthier, Carle averaged more like 21-22 minutes per game, except when he served as Pronger's partner in Prong's first season here, when he (Pronger) played a ton of minutes (25:55/gm)...in that case Carle averaged 23:23/gm. - phantasm
Whether it is 23-25 minutes or 21-22 minutes. The premise is the same.

Heard the same thing. Anaheim wants Schenn for Ryan. Doubtful. Flyers arent moving Schenn or Couturier. The Flyers are building around those guys with Giroux of course. |

Yeah, THAT I don't do. I don't want to miss the Brothers Schenn going to old city making Richards and Carter look like amateurs. |

As I mentioned before, I have no problem with MAB being the 6th d-man on the team if someone off the current top 6 is traded (assuming Carle is resigned). Looking at his ice time during the regular season and that he was active in game 1 against the Pens, I'm pretty sure Lava agrees with my assessment. - ravishingone
I like Bourdon. I think he has a chance to be an NHL regular. I like him better then Gustafsson actually.

Hi Bill,
1. You are assuming they carry Sesisto, Rinaldo and Shelley. If they sign another forward, someone must go. Also, I don't think they can carry all three similar players. Sestito or Shelley is in the minors.
2. Obviously you have Prongers included, but that will come off.
3. You are excluding the cap bonus cushion. Probably not a bad assumption but it might provide some cushion.
5. You have two backup d-man. Could start Bourdon in the minors if need be. - TheGreat28
You have to include Pronger. And Bourdon would need to clear waivers to be sent down.

No, but if it turns out that he is not quite NHL ready, what then? If his contract says he cant be sent down, you are stuck, for the time being, with 3 plus million sitting in the press box. I'm just saying it is something that needs to be considered.
That being said, I really hope the Flyers sign him, but I also think that this "must be on an NHL roster" caveat will scare some teams away. Especially those close to the ceiling. - MBFlyerfan
I don't think there can be anything in his contract that can say he can't be sent to the minors |

Since he doesn't have a contract, I'm not sure we can make that determination. I have only read that his agent has said that he wants a guarantee he is on an NHL roster this season.
Whether or not that means he cant be moved is another story, and if that IS the case, then that changes my opinion and I say go all out to get him.

I mistyped my response and I edited. What I meant is that there isn't anything that can be put in there saying he can't be sent down. He's not eligible for a No movement clause.

The problem is what is the bargaining chip. What do you have to offer him that any other team can't. It's not money, every team is going to offer the same money. The only chip is playing time and role on the team. Flyers, especially if they re-sign Carle are full on defense. Kids not stupid. He knows he'd be put in a back seat here.
