I think hes an underrated player in general. People soured on this kid and hes 22 years old. NHL defenseman need time to develop. Coming to Philly is just what he needed. - stveshdy
i go on recored here saying he will have a career year mark it down
Yesterday(?) we were talking here about draft sleepers from 2007 and last week I was discussing how often pre-draft scouting reports end up looking a little bit comical a few years later.
Found this Red Line Report ranking of the 2008 Draft. Kyle Woodlief knows his stuff, so I'm not picking on him here. But do you think in retrospect he might have liked to move #s 41, 32 and 37 on Top 50 up a little higher and change his skinny on each?
I could see them revisiting it to add some sort of common sense provisions to it.
It has to be easy enough to distinguish between signing an over 35 year old to a ten year contract he has no intention of fulfilling to avoid an excessive cap hit, and having an over 35 year old suffer a career ending injury like Pronger that could happen to a player AT ANY AGE.
We are not talking about chronic back or knee problems. I'm talking about concussions, eye injuries, etc. Injuries that are catastrophic but not age related.
There has to be an easy way. I understand the reasoning behind the over 35 rule, but now that it has been in practice for a while, it should be able to be tweaked to reflect the reality of the game. I can see both owners and players agreeing quite easily to a framework for this provision.
What I DON'T see the players agreeing to, is limiting the length of contracts an over 35 player can sign. - MBFlyerfan
There's a lot of rules in the CBA that I don't agree with. And one is having to carry a players Cap hit in the off season that you know isn't going to play on the team. Most of the off season Cap rules to me are silly and are limiting to a team's flexibility. I don't think a team should be punished in any way for a player that has a legitimate long term injury. I just don't see them changing any of that. I hope I'm wrong about that.

I don't know about 29 teams... Most Flyer fans female dog and moan about Pronger's $4.9MM LTIR. If guess the difference is the over 35 contract. But, still tying up $8.7MM in a guy who has serious concussion issues. I guess this is a good sign for Pen fans, that the management believe those issues are behind him. - leon neon
It was a brilliant play by the Pens and Sid again treats that franchise well. His cap hit was 8.7MM and it stays at 8.7MM. As a PIT fan how do you not love it. You got to keep the best player in the world at the same cap hit for 12 more years and if he does get hurt, it's not your money that you have to pay. If he gets hurt it's only t owner and Sid that suffers. Great day for Pens fans. Bet Malkin gets some thing similar.

Even then they insured his contract so the Pens would be compensated. I would hate to be paying the premiums on that policy though.

The Pens are rquired to have his contract insured. They will be paying a very high premium for that I'm sure. But that protects them somewhat from a long term injury.

Well worth the risk if you ask me. The chances he gets a long-term injury are no worse than the player sitting next to him. Obviously the money is different but if your the owner of the Pens you have to keep Crosby around.
Justin Schultz has reportedly narrowed his list of potential landing spots to five teams. The Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers have made his shortlist of destinations. The Detroit Red Wings were interested in the free agent prospect, but they were told they didn't make the cut. Schultz cannot sign a contract until July 1, but his decision on where to play will probably come before then.
