Yup. That "deal" franked everything up. For a lot of teams. I hope CGY finish last. In the league. - rockychocbill

Also on IT: @Real_ESPNLeBrun reports PHI dman Matt Carle likely to go UFA on July 1. - aosplayo
Seen this coming from miles away. Maybe the Flyers can sign Salvador for a year. Wouldn't mind going after Garrison if Carle leaves. |

We already knew he was going to go unsigned until after July 1. Now all that remains is to see what happens then.

Funny how a week and a deal changes things.
More than a few folks ready to run Carle out of town during the season are now maybe hoping he signs a "loyalty" contract with the Flyers.
*not looking at anyone in particular btw* |

I've made this statement plenty of times its a team game and one player leaving only opens the door for another. Sometimes its more than the name on the back of the jersey. The Flyers just need to find a player who fits what they want to do. I would go hard after Garrison if Carle leaves. |

Garrison is a DMan I see as a fit. Carle is a quality DMan, but I can't see paying him $5 million. How much will Garrison command? |

Absolutely. If Carle goes, he goes. Opportunity for another player to come on board. Or more opportunity for an existing player to get an expanded role. Meszaros in my opinion has the tools to provide offense from the back end. He has shown the ability to jump up into holes on the rush, and score. And he also possesses a very good shot. Both a slap shot and a wrist shot. And he doesn't pass the puck as well as Carle does. But in time he can get there. He has untapped potential. Other then Timonen, partly because he's 38. Meszaros in my opinion has the best overall skill set of any Flyers defenseman.

Agreed. The Flyers will move on without Carle if he decides to leave. The Flyers can add another defenseman through free agency (would like Garrison) or they can let one of their own step in and play. I like Mez as well.
Timonen-Mez
Grossmann-Coburn
Schenn-MAB/Lilja/Gus/UFA
Mix an match however. |

Less than Carle imo. Which allows the Flyers to add him and still have some money to add a 4th line center. |

The Flyers realistically have plenty of Cap space to re-sign Carle, even if it is 5M or 5.25 equal to the Wideman deal. Re-sign Voracek, and add a couple of lesser players.

he definitely seems to have the tools, we'll see how well he can get it together. aside from the injury, he didn't have a terrible season statistically last year
if carle goes and the flyers don't bring someone else in, they're gonna need a big year from him |

Problem is I think Carle is going to get atleast 5.5M on the market and I dont know if the Flyers are willing to spend that. They can go out and attempt to add Garrison, Salvador, etc. that will be less money. Not that they dont want Carle back. |

I'm curious to the team willing to take that cap hit. Its only for two more years but its still an overpayment for a defenseman. |

By "they" I hope you don't mean the Flyers. I'd rather have Carle at $5.5M than Bouwmeester at his ridiculous $6.68M. |

If Carle is going to go out and play the UFA game and leverage those offers to the Flyers. Well then you tell him this is what were prepared to pay. Whatever that is. If you want more, thanks for the years, and good luck. And you look elsewhere. But I'm not convinced just by Lebrun's tweet that that is going to happen.

Who would the Flyers give up to get Jay-Bo AND that contract anyway? It's a lose-lose proposition. |

Its been said many times on here it only takes one crazy team to overpay. A team like Edmonton can offer a ton to upgrade the blueline. Now thats one example but if Carle is going to test the market I think he will compare prices and see if its worth the extra money (ex:5.25 vs 5.75M). If its close maybe he decides to stay but if the Flyers are not willing to go above 5M I think he walks. |

If Carle goes the free agent route, and the 6th dman is either Bourdon, Lilja, or Gustafsson, how will the Flyers have improved on defense, when essentially Schenn replaces Carle. |

In the end is Matt Carle a 5 or 6 million dollar player....I don't think so....I'm hardly a big fan.....but he is a top 4 d man....with flaws.....but nothing on the UFA market after Suter is any better.....the kid may get his.....but putting the flyers against others is a mistake if he indeed wants to stay....just ask Ville Leino. |

Which situation would they be better off in as far as defenseman goes, if Carle is not re-signed?
Having traded for Schenn, or not having traded for Schenn?
So regardless if Carle stays or goes, the Flyers have improved their defensive depth.
