so why hasn't he signed a multiyear deal? seems like it'll be 1 year deals every year. - flyersfan51
Because he signed a single one year extension last year we get to this conclusion? |

I think his agent knows his value, but he is RFA and the Flyers have all the leverage with him right now.
Anyway multi-year deals are the kiss of death in Flyer Land. |

I'd find a way to keep Letang.
I don't know much about the prospects coming up, but he seems like a key player for you guys. - Marc D
He is, but pretty much everyone of our prospects is an offensive defenseman. Obviously nowhere close to Letangs level, but Shero likes drafting them. |

Would you agree Letang is probably the odd man out based on the team structure and the prospects coming up? As much as it would suck to lose such a stud I just don't see how we keep him. - canadianpenfan
So hard to replace a proven and still young top pairing defenseman. I would think Shero would be more likely to bit the bullet and sign Letang long-term and then shop Marc-Andre Fleury and go with a less expensive goaltender if necessary.

Right now, they're pretty much locked into carrying 8 D (assuming Carle re-signs and no other trades).
Bourdon is no longer waiver exempt, at there is a major risk he'd be claimed if waived to send to AHL. Even if he somehow made it through, he'd be confined to AHL for the entire year because there is virtually zero chance he'd make it through recall waivers at half price.
Lilja is on an over-35 contract, so the Flyers are basically stuck with him unless they can find a team that wants a discount veteran 7th D with an expiring contract. - bmeltzer
Carrying 8 defenseman might be the final straw for Mr Jody Shelley. |

That's another option, my only problem is that won't save that much money. Fleury's hit is 5, even if you found a goalie at 3 more money would need to be freed up. |

14 million in cap space after the Crosby extension, anything is possible. - canadianpenfan
that's amazing they have so much cap space and have that kind of team. |

Maybe give Letang a 3-4 yr extension to give time for the prospects to develop a bit?
Idk if Letang would settle for a "shorter" deal though. |

Next summer, both Malkin and Letang come up for extensions before going into the final year of their respective contracts. Even if Malkin accepts the same mini-bump in his cap hit up to $9.0 million, Letang's cap hit is probably going to double from $3.5M to $7M. - bmeltzer
Pens might be really fortunate Staal didn't sign that extension with Malkin and Letang coming up for extensions next summer. |

it'll be a 1 year deal -- come up with your own awesome phrase. |

Bill,
What are your thoughts if Flyers used the approximate $5 mil for Carle and used it to get a cheaper veteran defenseman like Colaicovo, O'Brien, Hannan, Zanon, Salo, or Kuba?
They would still have Meszaros-Schenn-Grossmann-Coburn-Timonen with Gustafson, Lilja, and Manning and Bourdon (if he is still here) as 7/8 options.

and you know this how? Even if he does one more one year deal it doesn't mean every year for the next 15 or so years of his career he will be signing one year deals. come up with common sense |

Doan would be great if interested in Philly but the four-year contract demand is excessive. Wouldn't even want to go three years out, but OK depending on cap hit he'll trade off for an extra year. Two, absolutely. - bmeltzer
Bill i agree in pricipal but it is the cost of doing business these days. |

got plenty of common sense....you kinda see a trend coming when he signs a 1 year and they gave him a qualifying offer and he hasn't signed it yet which means it'll most likely be a 1 year deal......
so that's common sense for you -- now move on dude. |

Flyers' summer rookie camp roster. Clapperton is an interesting wildcard, ala Hyka last year (but actually eligible to be signed).

I'm still interested in seeing how Blake Kessel does this season.
Is Justin Hamonic related to the Islanders guy? |
