Accomplishing that would be a home run, and I agree those are all worthy goals, but not sure if all can be done this summer.
I think Jake Voracek can play top line minutes with G if they don't get another sniper or resign Jags. OK his shooting needs work but he is a demon with puck possession and has size and speed.
As to the D, waiting to go after a Timonen replacement next season makes a lot of sense, there may be more options. If they have a chance to get someone sooner, Homer will go for it, he is not shy about it.
I do expect some tweaking on the bottom six. Prust is a dik but I'm sure I would love him as a Flyer.
A decent back up goalie is a priority now. - Marc D

Schenn could very well become a Regher type top-line shutdown blue-liner IMO.
I think he has a higher ceiling than you're giving him credit for. - LordStanley88
this opinion is the one I've heard from a GM type and read about from a scout. it also seems to be the prevailing opinion of most NHL commentators ive heard/read. I certainly don't expect him to provide much in the way of offence.
Have this feeling there is going to be a lot of upset people on July 1st - stveshdy
Well the question becomes, does Homer panic if he loses Carle and burn the money saved by not signing him on an asset we don't need. Does he over pay in terms of roster players for a guy like Nash or Ryan? Or does he stay calm, regardless of what the Pens do, and make the smart moves now and the future for this team.
That's due to the fact that we have arguably 5 top 4 d-man with the potential to acquire Kimmo's l-t replacement next off-season.
I'd really, really like to see Homer get Ryan though and get that cornerstone winger to pair with Giroux for the next decade. - LordStanley88
I agree. I'd love Ryan, but not for Jake, Mezzy, and a 1st. And if Carle leaves, the Flyers can't trade a defenseman anymore so I'm not seeing how this deal gets done. If the Flyers traded Read and 1st could they conceivable acquire Ryan? And if so would they be able to re-sign Jake and Jagr?

I agree, it was just a poor value deal. if carle is leaving, wouldn't you rather have not made that deal and be willing to move other assets to get a better replacement? we need a puck mover as it is already. I know it's more of a risk, but schenn, while a nice prospect, is not exactly the guy who would make our mix work in the absence of carle. - isaiah520
As it stands, Schenn for JvR was a very pragmatic hockey deal that addressed future needs for both teams. Unless you have a crystal ball, it's impossible to tell who got the better end of it today. Either player could either blossom or disappoint from the change in scenery -- and in JvR's case, health could be the big equalizer when all is said and done.
With respect to Carle, if the Flyers had the foresight to preserve enough tagging space to get a deal worked out for Carle well in advance of July 1, I'm sure they could have had him sewn up for the reported $4.25-4.75M/per. The Schenn trade had very little impact on Carle's future, especially considering that they actually gained some additional tagging space in that deal.

how do you know there were other (better) options out there? and sometimes deals aren't made simply to fill an immediate need. particularly when talking about 22 year olds
it's very possible that homer traded jvr for schenn because he feels that move helps the flyers moving forward, despite the fact that schenn might not be the best fit as a carle replacement this season
Salaries are higher than they were in seasons past, that's just the biz, sir. - BulliesPhan87
True, but because that is so, do you really pay this guy nearly 6MM or more? I just can't justify it. Kimmo is making 6.3MM, Coby 4.25MM, Meszy 4.0MM. As you said, as the years go up so do salaries, but this also has to do with the fact that there are barely any top 4 defensemen on the market. I don't feel that Carle is worth the same as Kimmo (in his prime when contract was signed) and he's not nearly or more than 2MM better than Coburn and Meszaros. You have to let him walk.

How does the NHL make enough money to pay players so much? - Dkos
Well, the salary cap increases each season are due to revenue increases, so the money is being made somewhere along the line. Can't say I know the specifics.

what makes me doubt the reports of them being close to an agreement in that 4.25 range is the grossman signing..... they had the tagging space prior to that (if i recall correctly). i was surprised when i heard about the reported "deal" between the flyers and carle because i thought the grossman signing seemed to indicate that carle was going to FA (because they used up his tagging space so quickly)
making all sorts of assumptions, but that's how it appeared to me
