the guy hasn't even played a shift in a flyers jersey. I'll stick with the Cinderella ride that turned into a pumpkin shy of a cup, thank you - JoeRussomanno

I'm with you there. I think the NHL is having trouble finding that happy medium though. You don't want it to be 1980s hockey but you don't want to slow it down to late 90s-pre-lockout hockey. I think it's at a solid level right now. It was a little better a year or two ago though IMO. - NickTheKid87
I'd actually like to see something done about blocking shots. I don't think a player should leave both feet to do it. A. it puts them in too vulnerable of a position. B. teams like the rangers would otherwise be lousy. IF we're gonna do that, then why not just put three guys in goalie pads?
I would be thrilled if he turned out like VK but those attributes dont allow for a player to be as impactful in todays game as it was in the clutch and grab era. I hope LS spends this summer working on his footspeed and skating. With improvemnets in theses area's, coupled with the physicallity he brings, I think LS with turn into the player we hope he can be.....I'm also in "I wanted more return for JVR" camp. - KINGKENZO
I understand your points. However, I do believe Luke is better with an outlet pass then Grossmann on the backline. Not exactly like Schenn had a lot of great scoring options he was passing the puck to in Toronto. He won't be a big point getter here because he won't get PP time also, but I think he has more offensive skill then he is given credit. I do believe with the absence of Pronger there has been a lacking in the defensive core to bring a real physical edge. What I mean is basically someone willing to lay the body on a forward, which others see and follow suit. I think Luke can be that guy. Agreed Vlad played in a different era, but I think Luke can bring that physical presence which may give a little doubt to an on rushing forward, do I make a beeline for the front of the net or should I just stay more to the perimeter?
As far as more compensation for JVR. First, I was as big a fan as anyone with JVR. He has the potential to be a 30 goal scorer. However, I think what hurt JVR's trade value, he isn't very responsible in the defensive end to this point. Basically, I wouldn't classify him as an effective two-way forward. However, that doesn't mean he can't evolve into that type of player. Flip the coin and similiar questions are about Luke Schenn. Gets beat to the outside, defensive awareness, offensive game needs to develop. I find them very similiar. In my opinion, JVR would have been added with another asset to acquire an Enstrom on defense, or Nash and Ryan if the Flyers traded him for a forward.

do you think clutch and grab will ever truly disappear? Seemed like Grossmann got away with his share last year. - JoeRussomanno
Not entirely and it shouldnt. But watching some of the games during that era, Lindros had literally had to skate with guys hugging him hahahah. It was definitely more of a big mans' game. In today's era, mobility is what separates a D-man from the pack. I like guys like Gross, I like physical D-men but IMO if Schenn is going to become a top-tier D-man he needs to significantly improve his mobility.

That's not a bad idea. Here's some numbers:
Guys with points per game adjusted for 82 games (minimum of 20 games) that could have gotten 100 points or more:
2009-10:
1. Alex Ovechkin - 124 points
2. Henrik Sedin - 112
3. Daniel Sedin - 111
3. Sidney Crosby - 111
5. Nicklas Backstrom - 101

The Flyers definitely lost a lot from not retaining Carle in the puck movement, passing, playmaking side of things. But in Schenn they gained in the physical department. So if Schenn can learn his angles better and anticipate and read the play, which comes with experience, he'll be much better defending against the rush. The Flyers have a ex defenseman in their organization that was also challenged in the skating department, that can help teach those things to Schenn, in Derian Hatcher.

I can't see him not being a fan favorite. He could never pan out and be a 3rd pairing at best and still be more appreciated then, say, Matt Carle ever was, solely for hits like that.
