Actually you can, but the offer would have to be one that would give different compensatory picks. - HonkFortheGoose

because i never reed garth's, ummmmmmm, nonsense, i'm assuming that o'reilly gets an offer sheet from the sabres for a salary that's well over $8m per which represents four #1 compensatory draft picks? |

Right, but if the first offer sheet would be compensated by 4 1sts, then you can't offer another offer sheet that would overlap any of those.
For example: A team may not have two different players sign offer sheets at the same time if the value of the offered contracts would involve any of the same draft picks as compensation. For example, if a restricted free agent accepts a contract with a yearly salary of at least $7,835,220, the team can only offer to other restricted free agents contracts less than $3,134,089 per year, since those would not require any first round pick as compensation.

Yes, and he's not worth that much. Any offer in the next tier down would be matched anyway, so it's really not worth it.
I have a feeling O'Reilly will end up being like Dubinsky. A more than solid player in his own right, but will never end up being the world beater that certain people thought he would be. |

I wouldn't either. I bet some of this gets changed in the new CBA. With the way salaries have gone, I bet they change parts of this to reflect that. |

the contract for weber, as astonishing as it might look right now, does allow them to match and trade a year from now...
$14m in the first year is a boatload to eat, but it's far less than the $26m was that was rumored earlier...

It will change a little, but I doubt that much. The contracts still aren't anywhere near as bad as they were pre-lockout. Right now, only the players considered "elite" are getting these kinds of deals. When we start getting back to Bobby Holik type contracts, then there will be a bigger stink made of things. |
