I think it's safe to go Coburn over Kim Johnsson at this point. - The_Universe
When Coby wins an Ashbee Trophy -- Johnsson won two -- he might supplant Johnsson in my vote. Otherwise no.

The two glaring differences for me would be -
11 - Don Saleski
15 - Terry Crisp
and it'd be a tough call between Jimmy Watson and Dave Poulin for #20.

OK I'll give you that one, Bill. Did you have fits choosing between Forsberg and Dan Kordic at #21? Not sure which one I'd pick... |

That was real, real tough call for me. Picked Watson because he spent his entire career in Philly.

Not Kordic, but I did consider Dave Brown. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: KalPa, Flyers Numbers, Flyers HOF Poll - bmeltzer
Gotta differ with you on a few of these Bill:
3-Behn Wilson, lord knows he probably had more downs than ups, although I am convinced that if he had been given a full season in AHL at the start of his pro career and was teamed with right coach he could have been an all-star. I gotta put him on the list though because hands down he was the scariest fighter I've ever seen! You could actually see fear on the faces of many of the guys he fought. Plus watching go toe to toe with Clark Gillies and kicking the crap out of Barry Beck was priceless!!
5-After last years playoffs I would go with Coburn by a whisker over Johnsson.
11-Don Saleski - I'll take a solid 3rd line winger on back to back cup teams and 3 straight trips to the finals over a flash in the pan one dimensional forward any day.
18- This was a tough one, but I have to go with Ross Lonsberry over Richards. Roscoe may have been the most underrated player on those cup teams. As I am in my late 40's I can actual remember seeing those teams play! Lonsberry was an excellent 2 way winger on a back to back cup team, and while Richards is a very good player, I gotta give the edge to Roscoe.
20- I'm with you on Jimmy Watson, its just so hard not to think of Dave Poulin, who was the epitome of a heart and soul player, when I see #20.
30 - Doug Favell - Gotta go with the starting goalie for the original 72-73 Broad Street Bullies especially since he backstopped the Flyers to their first ever playoff series win and he was outstanding in their game 1 upset of Montreal in round 2. Snow was ok, but lets face it he was primarily a career back up in a 26 team league while Favell was a starter for at least 3 or 4 years in a 16 team league.
All in all a nice article, thanks! |

Not too many defensemen can play 26 minutes/game against the top line of other teams.
He may not be elite, but he's just a notch below. |

All good but I think some heavyweights and long time players are more deserving.
8 - Dave Shultz
21- Dave Brown
29 - Glenn Cochrane.
Recchi is probably the one I could be swayed towards keeping but I think Brownie deserves 21 over Peter. As much as I was fan of Otto, when I think of 29 I think of Cochrane with those jack hammers flying. |

Since it's a question of number association, I would say Watson comes to mind first when I think of #20...
and I hope to all that's holy that this Timonen news is BS.

A case can be made for Schultz but, IMO, Recchi gets it by virtue of "Crazy Eights" line and setting team's single-season point record -- which may not be broken for years to come given the league-wide reduction in scoring since then.
Cochrane wore a bunch of different numbers before becoming 29 for the majority of his Flyers career.
I considered Brownie over Forsberg.

Timonen had his surgery months ago and should be OK for start of season even if season starts on time. Wouldn't be surprised if the guy who tweeted it saw the Finnish reports that Timonen won't play for KalPa due to back surgery and reported it as "confirmed breaking news" rather than realizing the surgery happened at the start of the offseason.
