Even if the Rangers ate half of his salary, I'm not sure any contenders would be able to take on that kind of cap hit right now. Yes, he was an all-star last year, but he essentially lost the starting job to Georgiev by the end of the season. Where would he go? Calgary maybe? He's got a NMC. Rangers would never trade him to the Islanders. Columbus? Chicago? I don't see it happening.

Ek was eating an Oh Henry when he was writing this. Innocent mistake.

But why is he so shocked about the Blues and Flames talking about Gunnarsson. Let's look at some facts:

-Gunnarsson is a 6-7-8 on the Blues depth chart
-he makes $1.75M for this year and next
-that's expensive for the role he plays, especially since the Blues would love to free up some cap space to potentially bring back Maroon for cheap
-meanwhile the Flames are actively shopping for a depth d-man after Valimaki tore his ACL

Not that earth-shattering. You really think the Blues are worried about Gunnarsson being the guy that puts the Flames over the top. They'd love to dump him and are exploiting the Flames desperation.
