Nice read Carol! I think Bo fits the mold of bottom 6 on a stacked (All-Star/Olympic) team very well. His defensive awareness and shutdown capability with offensive upside is basically how those spots are assigned. He has some tough and established competition though. It'll be a big year but also no pressure for him to do anything extra this season as I doubt he will be focused on anything more than getting more icetime in Van |

I hope he gets a look. He's shown quite a bit of promise in his rookie year. A second or third line center role this year could help his chances.

I can't see him cracking the roster but you never know.
THN posted their projected roster that looked pretty decent and Horvat was the 5th C on it.
Saad RNH Mackinnon
Gaudreau McDavid Strome
Huberdeau Monahan Jenner
Galchenyuk Couturier Eichel
Drouin Horvat
Jones Trouba
Ekblad Hamilton
Murray Rielly
Severson Ceci
Gibson
Subban
Fucale

I think Couturier is his biggest competition for that bottom 6 role. He has experience shutting down the best in the playoffs but hasnt broken through offensively (though Horvat hasnt yet either, but I think he has a better shot to at this point)
EDIT: Also just noticing the lack of NHL experience in net for the U-23 team, obvioulsy given how slow they develop. The position would definitely have to be the weak link on the squad |

The only team I'll cheer for is the one with the most Canucks on it... don't care who that is. |

Wow - never realized that Ryan N-H was that old. I always thought that Jagr was the oldtimer in the NHL.....

I think Schenn, Scheifele, Wilson, Lowry, Bennett, Pearson, Miller, Lazar, Tierney, Nieto among probably others will be also potential players in the mix.
Many of those guys can play the bottom 6 role very effectively, regardless as long as Horvat plays well he will likely be in consideration.

I'd say a 50 point defensively responsible player is a good estimation for him. |

I think that is very reasonable if not a little optimistic.
Last year the 50-60 point centers were:
Strome, Little, Staal (Eric), Stepan, ROR, Duchene, Bergeron, RNH, Backes, Brassard, Plekanec.
I think he will be more of a 40-50 point guy which I would still be very happy with. |

With players scoring less, is 40 pts the benchmark for a top 6 C?
59 "centermen" scored 40 or more points last year.
13 teams including Vancouver had only 1 40 point center.
8 teams had 2 players with 40 points
7 teams had 3 players with 40 points
1 team (NSH) had 4 players with 40 points.
1 team (NYI) had 5 players with 40 points.
Obviously there will be argument about whether a player always plays C but I looked at only players that NHL listed as C's. For example ROR and Strome were included but played wing as well.
Edit. fixed numbers... |

All of NYI C's played at least 78 games. If Bonino was one point away (39 points, 43 point pace) and missed 7 games last season. |

The top 60 C ranked by points per game and all played over 40 games is a bit different but Bonino still doesn't make the cut.
9 teams with 1 player in the top 60
11 with 2
8 with 3
1 with 4 (NSH)
1 with 0 (ARI) |
