If we keep Lucic now we lose Pearson in the future. And that cannot happen. Him and TT73 need to stay put |
|
|

Life is good, somebody is gonna sign Lucic to a long term deal and in 3 years they are going to say WTF did we do..
Thank goodness Kings did not go Dustin Brown with Lucic.

It's not a big deal to lose lucic. It's what LA GAVE UP! Ridiculous that this has happened twice in 2 years. Half year of that loser Sekera and 1yr of lucic for Miller, Mckeown, jones an TWO 1sts! |

I agree. That can't happen anymore. But it was a gamble, and it could have easily worked out the other way. We could have won another cup and losing jones, miller, mckeown, would have looked like nothing. Its just the risk you run.

He didn't cost a lot to get. So I didn't bother mentioning his name |

Zykov is probably going to be a good player. So I'd say jury is out on that. |

I was following along, nodding my head at everything, until I got to the line (linked and bolded, no less) about, with Lucic, LA being forced to expose Nick Shore. I'm pretty sure, Jason, that you're the only one would've lost sleep over that . Other than for that reason, I agree that LA did the right thing. |

Well, even if you are not a fan of Shore, exposing him probably lessens the chance someone takes Brown or Gaborik. Who would you rather take? If anything, Shore is a young, more cost controlled shut down center. |

They would trade Shore before they left him exposed. |

Let's hope we don't make anymore trades for rentals ever again. I think Lombardi should be under mandatory, year-round drug testing for some of these deals he comes up with. |

Vegas is likely going to want experienced, proven players, since they need to stock an NHL team and be competitive right away. I don't see them having much interest in Shore (unless he has some breakout season next year, which I doubt). I do see them having interest in Clifford, though, so I think that the chance of them taking Clifford over Brown is greater than them taking Shore over Brown. If it's not Clifford, then it'll be someone else with Cup-winning experience that'll catch Vegas' eye, IMO.

He likely wouldn't be worth anything. If you're a GM of another team and you see that Lombardi wants to trade Shore to you because he's afraid that he's a player that'll be taken if left exposed, and you would likely just expose him, yourself, why would you make the trade? A year from now, 30 teams will have players who, ideally, they'll like to trade because they're afraid that they'll lose them for nothing, but whom they won't be able to move for anything close to good value because everyone else will be in the same boat. |

If the Kings go the 7/3/1 route, Clifford will be protected. I think they do go this route and end up trading Martinez either before the season or at the trade deadline, and end up protecting Doughty, Muzzin, and McNabb on the back end.
Kopitar, Toffoli, Carter, Pearson, Clifford, Lewis (assuming he's re-signed), and one of Shore/Gaborik get protected on offense. If it's Gaborik, then Shore gets traded for a 3rd round draft pick. There are several teams out there that don't have 7 other forwards that they would protect ahead of Nick Shore (I'm looking at you New Jersey) that need an NHL ready player to fill in a bottom-six center role. It's not as concrete as you make it seem. |

A young bottom 6 C who can play penalty kill, has dynamite defensive numbers, and is decent on the draw isn't worth anything? Okay. Noted.

That's looking at the team right now, but Lombardi will add players between now and then. He needs to replace Lucic, and that'll likely be with a contract that needs to be protected. He may also want to add another veteran to the bottom-six. Then, you have the likelihood of a mid-season (trade deadline) addition or two, and though those are likely to be rental contracts that won't need to be protected, it's possible that Lombardi, burned by rentals recently, may get a player with some years (contract-wise or RFA-wise) that'll need to be protected. By this time next year, LA may well have 7 forwards more worth protecting than Clifford. In fact, we should hope for that, since that speaks better to the depth of the team than having Clifford as the 6th- or 7th-best forward.

It would've been nice if you'd also noted context. |
