If this kid could have just stayed healthy... things could have gone much differently. I've seen a lot of him play in GR and kept hoping he'd be able to break through and take a job in Detroit... just didn't pan out with all those injuries.
You can't blame Yzerman at this point for not qualifying an offer. I wish Svetch the best... as i don't think he'll be back in Detroit. My guess is somebody will take a chance on him... maybe give him a 1 year deal... may see him as low risk / higher reward for a cheap price.
I do think the best possible scenario with the expansion draft was to either lose Svetch or Cholowski. We got to keep Stecher. |

Agreed on all. He’s one of the better human beings you’ll meet. You want guys like him to succeed. Maybe Carolina will let the brothers Svech share some ice |

Another stupid pick wasted. I remember the 2015 draft. I was physically there. Detroit had wingers like Nyquist and Tatar on the roster. Mantha was viewed as a top line winger who was developing nicely. At the time, there was still high hopes for guys like Jurco, Frk, AA. It was very clear this roster needed d-men, and top 6 centers.
After Boston had their trio of Zboril, Debrusk, Senyshen I was begging to move up 3 picks and get Barzal. Didn't happen. OK. Move up one spot and get Chabot. Didn't happen. OK. We're probably picking Eriksson Ek then. He was heavily scouted by Hakan in Farjestad. I could live with that. A good 2-way guy that probably becomes a 2C one day.
Nope, we take yet another European winger. The absolute last thing the organization needed. Minny took Eriksson Ek with the next pick.
Basically the same thing happened in 2018. Hughes fell to 6. Pick Hughes. Pick Hughes. Get your d-man. No let's go Zadina. We already have Cholowski from 2 years earlier. Thanks Kenny.

I think they'll look into it, but they didn't claim him on waivers last season, so who knows. |

Koolie-hoolie
Seems like Kenny picked a lot of big-bodied D-men with subsequent picks that year that obviously did not work out. Yeah, he tried and failed. |

Enjoy Carolina, Geno . . . You know, unless your brother is deemed expendable by the Hurricanes "brain-trust," and is promptly shipped out a la Nedjelkovich and Bean! |

lol
yeah very sad to give up on a 25 year old goalie with less than 30 NHL games under his belt and a 23 year old defenseman who can't crack the lineup. |

Jacb DeLaRose was not given a qualifying offer by St Louis.
And Nemeth may be signed by NYR. |

The next pick was Vili Saarijarvi who was barely 170 pounds. I liked the pick. Worth taking a risk. But he was tiny.
Patrick Holway was big. But like most 6th rounders he went nowehere.
The following year was Cholowski. Not big-bodied. A total wimp. Big-bodied was Chychrun. We all know that story. Hronek was not big.
No idea where you get your facts from.

You're probably thinking of the 2017 draft. Kenny and his scouts (ie Draper, and some old junior hockey buddies) declared this the draft of size and character. Yeah! Character. We have some skilled guys in the system but we need some real character guys to push them.
So we begin with BIG Rasmussen. He scored lots of goals against teenagers who were 50 pounds lighter. Suzuki, Necas left on the board. Then Lindstrom. OK. Signed today. Has a chance. We then wasted NINE more picks on guys who never even came close. Most didn't even sign contracts they were so bad. 7 picks in the top 100 and we have Rasmussen and maybe Lindstrom to show for it.
I tried to warn at the time, again no hindsight, that Kenny and our scouts were totally inept. We were actually terrible at drafting. But I was silenced and the media wrote stories about finding gems like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Maybe 4 years later we're finally ready to admit how overrated this scouting staff is. |

Just a “heads up”. Wings and Bertuzzi haven’t been at the table. Calls coming in. I really don’t know where this one lands, but just an FYI |

Sounds like Yzerman is moving him for sure, no signs point to him coming back to DET |

Based on one of the recent press conf by Yzerman, Bertuzzi didn’t want to sign a multi-year deal. The questions is, what is he worth in return.
The worst decision, even at the time, was trading with Arizona so Nielsen could be signed. The Wings tried to hang on too long. A few more years of pain and hopefully the recent picks come into the NHL. |

I was not a fan of drafting Raz, there were more skillful forwards available. However I think Raz will be valuable moving forward, he seems to have carved out a niche for himself. I think Lindstrom will be a dependable defender going forward as well.

I’m by no means a Holland fan in his later years. He did work to build a fairly robust roster via the draft, but lost a step or 12 towards the end (actually started around year 12-13 of the 25 year SCPO run…).
Hard to say who’s gonna make it. Datsyuk, Z, Homer, etc… were gems. Repeating that luck is wistful thinking, for sure. Thankfully he’s gone. The Captain’s holding a pretty straight path, we just have to see what happens in 2-5 years.
Wondering what happens to Svech. If he stays, maybe league minimum? I don’t know how that works. Would be cool to see him in Carolina. He’s a great character guy, by all accounts. So I wish him well. Last chance at a good 1st impression, like Cholo. |

This is a good move, overall. He’ll mature, learn, be mentored by Leddy & Staal…not bad teachers. He has the tools, just needs to learn how to employ them. Interested to see how he develops. |
