So Ek says AM is a done deal but only after Nylander trade
If he is right about this this time it would be funny at least. |

The bloggers on this site regularly quote Friedman and Dreger but they never seem to quote Ek. And he’s the one who pays them. |

There are very few teams with the cap space to do a deal for Nylander.
Teams that could do a deal are looking at rebuild and acquiring picks and prospects.
Who are the teams with an interest in Nylander? |

Yeah, there are NO teams interested in a 40 goal scorer. And come trade deadline this season, nobody will be giving away prospects and 1st round picks for a 40 goal scorer…….never happens. |

Dobson and Wahlstrom would be an absolute steal for the Leafs
(which is why NYI would never do it) |

From last blog:
If you realistically ignore other teams' problems because those aren't our problems and look strictly at his performance, it's a fair argument that at no point during his 5 years here has JT ever earned his $11m salary. Just being strictly objective and saying, again, whether he left money on the table or not isn't the point - it's that based on value provided, he simply hasn't done it. He's been a 2nd line centre - and last year played about 1 minute less per game than a guy like Malkin in Pittsburgh, who is 4 years older. His 5v5 play has been decent, but he has - as noted by more than people on our board - struggled frequently.
His goal and point production has been excellent all things considered, but probably closer to a guy who deserves $8m. Depending on how debatable that number is, the simple argument that he really shouldn't be over $10m is fair, I think - and that's sort of being generous. - Monkeypunk
He was overpaid for his production from day 1 and hasn't lived up to it since.
You are absolutely correct in this.
For the reasons everyone else has pointed out - I would never try and force him out. The optics are a nightmare and his value is not THAT far off his salary that the negative impact of pushing him out would come close to being worth it.
This is where I disagree. When Dubas got fired, after five years, only 1 series victory and the pending contract renewals of Matthews and Nylander, they are fully justified in asking him to waive the NMC.
Players have been asked to waive and pushed out many times before. The deal was given by a different GM, he was given ample opportunity and now it's time to move on. If his contract is detrimental to the team, he has to go and everybody involved would understand the circumstances.
Every Leafs fan knows his 11 AAV is killing the team cap. Nobody who wants the team to succeed would be upset if they moved him and it allowed the Leafs to keep Matthews, Nylander and allow the Leafs to bring in more help in other areas of the roster.
But just reading a bunch of people talking about how he's worth it? Just to spite the guy who is UG and claims he isn't UG? I don't know. There's a middle road in there that notes that JT isn't worth his salary, but he also isn't worth destroying your franchise's reputation over!
His contract costing the Leafs star players like Nylander because of the cap situation is more destructive than pushing him to waive his NMC. If trading Tavares means that future UFAs won't come here to be overpaid and under perform, then it's a win-win scenario. |

I am sure multiple teams would like to have Nylander. But, once you take out the rebuilding teams, who is left to trade for him. Islanders? Preds? Kraken? Who else?

He’d probably get 30G 65pts with the Sens.
Good luck demanding 10M + |

I think when you're trading Nylander, it boils down to three major factors.
1) Big money potential. Either 10AAV or chance to put up big points.
2) The city he lives in be it weather and/or lifestyle.
3) The coach letting him play offensive hockey without playing defense.
Unless somebody has the official list of teams on his NTC, I'm going to guess it's the following.
Columbus, Montreal, Arizona, Philadelphia, Detroit, St. Louis, Ottawa, Buffalo, Winnipeg and Nashville (maybe or maybe not) could be Calgary instead.
Teams you absolutely don't want to trade him to because he'd bite you later.
Boston, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Pittsburgh and New Jersey.
Teams who you would hesitate to trade him to because he might bite you later.
New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Florida, Washington
Teams you absolutely have no problem trading him to.
Vegas, Colorado, Edmonton, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Seattle and Vancouver.
Calgary might be on his NTC list. Or it might not be. It's really hard to tell.
Vegas, Colorado, Vancouver, Edmonton and Dallas can't afford him without moving out serious money.
Los Angeles and Minnesota would be a tight squeeze. Seattle could afford it.
I think he would accept a trade to Anaheim and San Jose because he's a California kinda of guy and big point potential (like Karlsson). Both teams suck so he might not want to play there but they could also overpay him to extend.
Chicago, I don't think would be on his list because they could give him a chance to put up big numbers with Bedard and also might be able to give him 10 AAV he's looking for when Foligno and Perry come off the books next year and open up 8 AAV. |

Orders one and two for the Leafs offseason should have been goaltending and defense.
Goaltending is the same combination of Samsonov (not signed), Woll, and Murray. No change.
Defense is arguably worse, but losing Holl was addition by subtraction.
Very similar roster. Same coach. Don't expect different results.

Ottawa did not have cap space for DeBrincat. I doubt they would be able to create the space for Nylander. I just don't understand the numbers everyone keeps floating. Some, for example, said Pageau and Dobson would be a good deal for the Leafs. But the combined cap on Pageau/Dobson is $9m. That is $2m more than what they are currently paying Nylander. |

Absolutely agree. Hellebuyck should be their #1 target.
Would have signed guys like Graves, Mayfield, Schenn, Dumoulin, Acciari etc.
The only benefit will be the other teams in the division may have also become weaker and take a step back. Metro is still strong. |

Dude, no one’s scared of wee Willy Nylander.
Every team has better players than him, i doubt he’d crack my top 50.
We all know he’s all about the money, and that’s his right. So I doubt he cares where he goes as long as he can get the biggest contract possible. |

He was atrocious in Dallas his last season, -25 in goal differential. |
