For real. Let your kid brother handle the rent! I’d love to see them play together

Nice write-up!
These players have some hard choices to make. I hope all that are mentioned that have a hope of gaining a spot on the big club go over to europe to keep in shape and have gained an out clause to be able to come back!

Thanks double H! It is really difficult to sift through some of these numbers. I want these players to have the opportunity to fight for a spot, but the financial ramifications are fairly serious. Many of these younger guys don’t have a family yet, but if they did I imagine it’s even tougher to figure out. Here’s hoping for the very best for all!

Agent and management fees take up 25%? Sorry but that's an extreme exaggeration. First of all, what are management fees? I can help. It's fees paid to others to manage your money, handle your tax returns, and then concierge services like having someone look after all of my finances. I'm too busy to pay my credit card on time. I'm too busy to make sure my home insurance gets renewed or my new car gets added to my auto insurance. So I pay a manager to do this. I know a few players and they've said most lower-salary guys don't do this. I have one house, one car, one cell-phone, and my dad has a great accountant and money manager that I use. Taxes also aren't 50% as there are fairly simple ways to reduce that. Again, I know a player living in Canada. He makes about $1M. His actual tax rate is 30%. His agent takes a small cut. He pays a few thousand bucks in accounting/legal fees. He invests is low-cost ETFs. He takes home over 50% of his money. Avery is again exaggerating.

Your insistence is a bit infuriating. Panarin has also claimed these same numbers. You’re just chiming in to be a jerk at this point. I’ve known several players and sone accountants. Avery mentioned you can do things to reduce taxes. I wish you would do more than muck up these columns with your ignorance and a stupidity. I put real work into this. Please stop crapping on it.

Keane's good but yeah I'm not happy about it.

Its OK if you think my opinion on this is ignorant and stupid. Carry on with the story of 50% going to taxes, 25% to fees, and 20% to escrow, leaving a player with just 5%. Some of these poor players should start a go fund me page if this is accurate.

lol piss off

It might be time to accept that Evgeny may not ever be a full time NHLer given his age and the number of injuries he's had.

I know he hasn't been in Detroit long...and as a UFA I dont expect him to return there...but any idea what will happen with Gagner? His past few years of mediocrity had me thinking a PTO with the Leafs and his childhood buddy John T followed by a 1 year deal for him to show he can play with guys like that. But as you've pointed out, the different financial risks and such of the NHL right now, makes that even more risky that previously.

Thank you so much for chiming in with that! I really liked Gagner. I think he would be a benefit to a team like Toronto. What I noticed more than anything was how much differently he would “think” the game. He would get in the zone and make some creative plays. He could be deceptive in his pass or shot selection, and it started to inspire the younger kids. Toronto needs those league minimum veterans mixed in with ELC kids. Gagner could be a third line/second pp guy.

I could see Gagner skating with an junior team for those months. I really hope someone gives him a shot. Even if he just came in until the trade deadline it would be good for a Veleno or Zadina to work with him a bit.

I am a Leaf fan and a Knights fan (Gagners Junior club) and I would love for Gagner to get a shot with the Leafs and Johnny T. I think he could really excel in that more free flowing offensive structure and we've seen him compliment talented players very well before. I've been hopeful of him getting a PTO with the Leafs at the end of this contract for a couple years now...just hoping this changing landscape doesn't interfere with that possibility.
