Rutherford ought to talk to Adams. Montour is younger and better offensively. He could be a big part of a package for Murray.

Package? I mean I'd probably be ok with Montour straight up for Murray just because I'm expecting nothing for Murr at this point, but if you want to send us Montour +, be my guest.

There’s no way this is true. You have a solid top 4 or dumo, letang, Pettersson, and Marino. Not only that but Johnson is still here and Rikola and Ruhd were resigned. Not to mention decent prospects of POJ and Maniscalco who could play at sometime this year or next.

he's a shell of what he once was.

a black hole on offense. Still great defensively but he's just way too expensive for what he is now.

I know a Benn fetish is out of the question, but could JR have at least had a Schenn fetish instead? And I can't stand the Schenn bros.

I would attach JJ to Rust in a trade, take back no salary, then use that money to get a good RW FA like Toffoli. But just like the Letang + JJ then get Pietrangelo fever dream, the acquiring team could just do the latter themselves. Unless, of course, the other team would rather have shorter, cheaper deals spread across more players.

And what teams are gonna take on 7m without sending salary back?

The same thing I said last off season still applies to Rust this season even though he continues to improve: by attaching Rust to Johnson, the receiving team is essentially paying top line money ($7 mil) for Bryan Rust given that Johnson has a negative impact on the ice. Hard pressed to find a bigger Rust guy than me, but who is wants to pay $7 mil for Bryan Rust?

I don't think it's that unreasonable considering Rust could have just had a breakout season and JJ could always be bought out for minimal cost. Then, when Rust's contract is up in 2 years, maybe they have the inside track to re-sign him. Maybe we take back ~$2M but still would have enough for a FA RW. Maybe we take back a 3RD and solve that problem. There are a lot of teams with open roster spots and a lot of cap space. $3.5M for a top 6 winger is nothing and $3.25 for a bottom pairing defenseman is not outlandish.

A lot of different possibilities, but the main point is that if the demand for Rust is high, and the Pens want to capitalize on his breakout season and sell high, then attach JJ and use the savings to acquire a FA RW.

I just cant figure it out. He is willing to talk about trading rust (3.5M) and letang (7.5M) and think he is going to improve the team by.........keeping jack johnson, signing another tanev (prob long term), signing flower and somehow not offering bjugstad for staal but taking a 7th round pick to hold $2M in salary??

How about:
signing larsson
not pursuing tanev
buy out or trade Jack Johnson (no pref at this point)
trade murray for whatever
start the season with jarry and desmith or jarry and a low cost veteran
see if horny cant be traded somewhere. 5.3M for bottom 6 is not something they can afford

I mean... It could just be coincidence that the Rust talk and Tanev talk were part of the same article. One move may not be correlated to the other.

More realistically, Tanev is the reason GMJR is willing to dangle Letang. He obviously sees Tanev as a top pair RHD.

The only way I can see Ruth signing Tanev is if JJ is leaving. Trading Rust is stupid.

Madden was saying he's hearing hockey won't be back until fans can fully return to the stands. Maybe not until next October. Certainly not December or January.

JJ never gonna leave. Already working on a 7 year extension for 2023. Doing the legwork now to make sure they don't lose the perennial Norris favorite in a few years

Did he say who he heard this from? Bettman just said otherwise like two days ago.

Bryan Rust for Palmieri + Wood.

Rust + Pettersson for Arvidsson/Bonino + Ekholm

Rust for Virtanen

Rust + Murray + something for Montour + Reinhart
