What current player has the best shot of getting close to Ovechkin 895? |

they say their records are made to be broken…. But then again, Wayne Gretzky has more lifetime assist than anyone else has points…..so maybe not all records…
We are currently in an era of goal scorers however…. Way more players have gotten to 40 goals over the last five seasons, then over the 10 seasons before that….So who has a shot?
I started off by looking at the players who have scored the most goals over the last 10 seasons in the NHL….Oveckin is #1 in that timeframe with 421 goals in 79 games played…it took him to his 20 season, 1487 games to get to 895…
However, in the last ten seasom there is a player about 20 goals behind OV with over 100 less games played: Auston Matthews…398 goals in 623 games…He is in his 9th season…he is actually on a faster pace than Ovechkin in his first 600 games….
So if Matthews where to continue with this pace, how many goals would he get 1487 games? The number might surprise you, but ready? 949
Of course you’d have to play 1487 games and continue to score like he has been scoring his whole career so far….. but it is possible…. Also, Matthew’s game is more well-rounded than Ovechkin‘s game, as Matthews as rounded into a great defensive player…Selke favorite this year I think…
