The New York Rangers began their preseason last night with a 3-1 win over the Devils at Continental Airlines Arena. All the goals were scored in the frist period off Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. Blair Betts opened the scoring. Adam Hall netted the second from the right faceoff circle between Brodeur's legs. Rookie Brandon Dubinsky scored the third goal for the Broadway Blues.

"They came out flying early on, it was good from that stand point" said Brodeur.

Al Montoya started in goal for Rangers. He stopped 12 shots and gave up one goal in 30:04 seconds of work. "Al was very steady. He's had a very good training camp so far, is 100% healthy, and looks like a veteran." Said Coach Tom Renney. "He showed the poise and positioning of an NHL goaltender, If he keeps going like that he'll be an NHL goaltender". Renney said.

"I was nervous, it was my first crack at it, but as it went on it felt good," said Ranger goalie Al Montoya about his first start in pre-season. He appeared in 40 games last season for the Hartford Wolf Pack before shoulder surgery ended his season. Of course there were two fights in the game. Francis Lessard of Rangers fought ex-Leaf Nathan Perrott who is trying to hook-up with the Devils. Grant Marshall and Ryan Hollweg had a really good fight in the second period.

Notes- Marc Staal played for the Rangers. Rumor coming out of East Rutherford is that after this season, if the arena in Newark is not ready, the Devils would like to play in Hartford. Thomas Pihlman scored the lone Devil goal.
