Perfetti’s popularity, and the price game - Seabrook

Highlights of the CBA were laid out in my last post. There are some interesting tweaks that address some of the bigger issues for players and owners. It was an impressive undertaking to get so much done in such a short timeframe.

Cole Perfetti has been popular in mock drafts for Detroit fans. Rossi, Raymond, Holtz and Drysdale are also popping up. we discussed those picks hereand here

It’s hard to nail anything down right now. I’m not convinced that Perfetti will be the guy, but Yzerman has made it really difficult to guess. In truth, Yzerman could conceivably trade back a couple spots for Askarov. It’s not a strong possibility, but there are so many ways the GM can play this out. One potential consideration, Yzerman could add some picks as well.

Enter Brent Seabrook. With 4 years left of a 6.875 million cap hit and an intentionally stagnant cap, Chicago may have to get creative. With a rebuild in full effect, Detroit could handle the dollars, but it would take a considerable haul to get Yzerman to do Stan Bowman so great a favor. With the surgeries Seabrook had this past year, I’d thought he would be on 4 years of IR. One of those cap space contracts that Toronto would be interested in. It looks, however, like the right shot defenseman feels ready to hit the ice again.

Looking at Cap Friendly, after this season’s bonus is paid, Seabrook is owed 12 million more in bonuses over the last three seasons, which is part of what makes a buyout almost pointless. He’s also owed 8.5 million in salary for the last 4 years of his deal. 20.5 million is a chunk to spend for an oft injured 35 year old defenseman. Here are some potential price tags. Again, this isn’t a likely scenario, it’s just one possible avenue for Yzerman to collect assets or picks.

Of course Detroit’s own contracts pop up. Nielsen has 2 years left with a 5.25 million dollar hit. Frans would have to approve due to a modified NTC. If he did, Yzerman could eat a part of that contract, even one million, and that would give Chicago a net gain of 4 million. Abdelkader’s deal feels untradeable. 3 years left at 4.25 million. If Steve eats 1 million per year and Chicago waives him to the minors, then he would only count for 2.25 million against the cap (a net gain of 6 million per year for Chicago) but Abby would have to approve the deal. He has a modified No Trade Clause. Part of the clause is supposed to be that if his minutes are reduced to a small enough amount the clause can be bypassed.

At 1.8 million and one year left, Glendening could well fit the bill for a contract coming back. Yzerman is allowed to eat half of that, leaving Chicago with a 900K hit that can be buried in the minors if needed. This would give Stan the most bang for his buck as far as player for player, but what else would be needed?

Draft picks. Two seconds? A first? If Chicago gets first overall this year, forget about it, but next year’s picks may be wide open. The Blackhawks are in that interesting place where there is still some solid talent. Should Bowman and Co land Lafreniere, the thought of piecing together for another run could well be on the horizon.

Well, what do you think? What would you charge to take this very expensive and bonus laden contract? Prospects? Picks? Let me know.
