Carter Rowney is a right shot center listed at 6’1”. He’s played 223 games and garnered 20 goals and 37 assists. Had a strong season in the faceoff dot last year (played 19 games) at 57%. Career average in the dot is 49.9. I guess you can’t have too much depth at center. With Stephen’s arrival it’s been suggested that Rasmussen may switch to the wing. That would likely make Rowney the 4th line center at this point. Not sure if that’s the plan. Depth signing.
A nice companion piece to this is Detroit’s “The Winged Wheel - Free Agency”. Just a quick reflection on the moves leading to this season’s roster. Good watch. They also replayed the quote of Yzerman saying he doesn’t “pencil in” prospects for spots. Either they take the spot or play in GR.
It was nice to see the comments from everyone regarding Zadina and Kotkaniemi. After a couple of days of decompression, here are some summaries. Zadina effectively has 1 season’s worth of NHL games (87) and 15 goals. The ridiculous trend of writers and fans calling him a “bust” pretty much ignores most logic. Ask the same people how long it took Tatar or Nyquist to get the same number of games and who they shared the ice with and the stammering begins. (I speak with a stutter, so I’m comfortable with the analogy”.
As far as KK, there’s a lot of back and forth about his value. On the center depth chart in Carolina he may be the third or 4th line option. 2.1 million was a number given by several GMs as his value on a 1 year deal. In short, the move looks like a massive overpay even if there is a lower dollar extension waiting. Montreal should grab the picks and go.
We’re getting closer to camp, and should expect at least 1 PTO. Berggren and Raymond have made their way over and are going to go hard in camp. Veleno is hungry as well, but these players need top 6 minutes. It’s not whether or not they can grab a 3rd or 4th line spot, it’s top 6 here or top 6 in GR. We’ll see how it goes.
