I wrote about Prospects Camp Roster and Denver Wings last week, and mentioned the absence of Seider from the roster. My take was that the club didn’t need to see him out there. Well, once in a while I get it right.

Zack Leach did a quick write up regarding the omission. Red Wings development director Shawn Horcoff told “The Athletic” (then quoted by Leach, paywall) that they are confident in the young defenseman. They want him focused on training camp.

Yzerman has done his level best to try and temper expectations. The excitement around Seider feels like a powder keg. In reality, if the young defenseman hadn’t gone to the SHL last year he could well have had his first year in the NHL. That is a fairly impressive thought, as he was just 19.

We all know there will be tough moments during the 82 game schedule for Seider. The leap to the NHL from every other league is immense. But, the confidence from management and the organization as a whole is almost shocking. Larkin grabbed a job in his second year, and that was a fairly big deal (with Pav and Z going to Holland on his behalf). Hronek took advantage of an opportunity and never looked back. Yzerman continues to refuse to “pencil in” someone just because they’re in the organization. Seider has grabbed the opportunity. Zadina and Rasmussen similarly got the seal of approval last season. The work ethic it takes to grab a slot is impressive.

We’re in the stretch. Games are going to be played this week. The blessing of 3 fewer teams at the tournament is better ice. (Bertuzzi snapped a tendon in a rut one year, though I think that was in GR). The intensity of that tournament combined with sometimes unseasonably warm weather can make things a bit dicey (and slushy). This year, each rink is only getting used once per day.

Thanks again to everyone who’s checked in. I’m still in recovery a bit, but things are going better. Knowing that games will be played is a soothing balm! Buckle up everyone. The post draft lull is ending. It’s time to for some hockey.
