Detroit had 2 goals 29 seconds apart in the first period. That was an impressive feat. Then the Red Wings scored twice in 21 seconds in the second period. With 1 second remaining in the 3rd, Debrincat capped off a win and kept Carolina from sweeping the season series.
Chiarot’s opening tally was a nice moving slap shot as he skated up to the rebound from Debrincat’s attempted slapshot that bounced off the post and across the ice. It was some quick skating and an old fashioned “grip it and rip it”. Kasper’s backhand goal was the result of hard work in the corner by the centerman and again jumping on the rebound. Patrick Kane had a “showtime” moment, snagging the puck in the neutral zone and speeding up ice for a 1 on 0 that he sent far side. Rasmussen, 21 seconds later, skated across the crease and tucked in a nice backhand shot.
Kasper continues to impress. He turned a callup into a top 6 role first on the wing and now in the center position. His confidence continues to climb and you can see when he’s dialed in how hard he fights to retrieve pucks in the corner or in battles on the half wall. Shortly after his callup in the interview with Grand Rapids coach Watson, I talked about seeing Kasper literally jump into a crowd to get the puck. The coach laughed and remarked about the compete level built into Kasper.
I would be remiss not to congratulate Alex Ovechkin for tying Wayne Gretzky’s goal record tonight with “The Great One” in attendance. For the Red Wings fans, it was a fun night and a win that saw 2 sets of goals scored less than 30 seconds apart. A rare night and a memorable night.
1st Period goals:
At 9:03 Chiarot opened the scoring. An odd goal as Larkin passed to Debrincat who ripped a shot on the right side that hit the near post and bounced to the left side faceoff circle and Chiarot just skated into it and slapped the puck in. 1-0 DET

26 seconds later Kasper added to the lead. After a puck battle (and possibly avoiding a tripping call) the puck went behind the net to Raymond who put a back hand shot on net that was tipped by Soderblom. Kasper collected the rebound and backhanded in his 16th of the year. 2-0 DET

21 seconds later Rasmussen scored his 11th to give Detroit a 3 goal lead. The big centerman skated into the zone, got to the puck but it was sent back to Motte who held it in at the line. He sent the puck back to Rasmussen who skated to the net and slid in a backhand shot far side. 4-1 DET

With 1 second left Debrincat adds a 5th goal to the night. In the final seconds of the game, Larkin stole the puck in the neutral zone, got it quickly to Debrincat whose first shot attempt saw his stick lifted, but his second attempt made it into the empty net. 5-3 DET
