Just a few days after Martin Brodeur openly expressed interest in signing with Montreal, news comes out the feeling may be mutual.

Brodeur has waited a couple months for the right opportunity to come along and, just as it looked like he might have to hang 'em up, he may just have found it.

RDS' Vincent Damphousse reported Monday night that the Canadiens have reached out to the 42-year-old net minder about signing with the team to backup Carey Price.

Via TheFourthPeriod: "According to former Habs captain Vincent Damphousse, now working for RDS, the Canadiens are interested in exploring the possibility of signing Brodeur, who is currently an unrestricted free agent.

"Marc Bergervin has contacted (Brodeur's agent) Pat Brisson to find out if Brodeur is available," Damphousse said on RDS on Monday evening."

As I mentioned, Brodeur said recently the Habs are a team that would interest him and he's still a free agent, so he's definitely available.

I figured the Canadiens wouldn't make much sense for Brodeur given Peter Budaj has been a pretty reliable backup and Dustin Tokarski burst onto the scene in the playoffs, but apparently that is the case.

In order to make room for Brodeur Habs GM Marc Bergevin would have to trade Budaj and demote Tokarski, which he's reportedly open to doing.

Via TheFourthPeriod: "Damphousse claims the Canadiens would trade current backup Peter Budaj to make room for Brodeur, if the two sides come to terms on a contract agreement."

Whether anything comes of this or not, it's certainly something to keep an eye on.
