The New York Islanders have a chance to advance to the Eastern Conference Final, as they face the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 5 tonight, leading the series 3-1.
The Islanders are coming off a 3-2 win in Game 4 and benefitted from a great performance by Thomas Greiss. It remains unknown whether Greiss will be back in tonight or if New York will turn to Semyon Varlamov. In a poll I did yesterday, 88 per cent of readers voted that the Islanders should start Varlamov over Greiss, though I may say I disagree with that. Greiss was excellent in Game 5 and made a huge difference for the Islanders– though realistically, they’re in a good spot with either goalie.
It also remains to be seen as to who will start for the Flyers, though my guess is that we’ll see Carter Hart back in net. I think Brian Elliott was good but Hart has been key for Philadelphia’s success and in a must-win game, starting Elliott would be the wrong call, in my opinion.
Despite getting the win in Game 4, I honestly thought it was New York’s worst game of the series. They gave up more quality chances than they generated and had to rely on goaltending.
That said, they’ve got the 3-1 lead anyways, and now it’s a matter of closing out the series.
Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
*As a side note, Oliver Wahlstrom will start his season in Sweden, after being loaned to AIK, a team in Sweden's second-highest professional league.*
