The New York Islanders have gone five games without a regulation loss and will look to extend that streak tonight against the Buffalo Sabres, following a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

The Islanders had a strong defensive performance against the Devils, despite giving up more shots than they took. New York got far better opportunities early on and gave up pretty much no scoring chances in the first period. Semyon Varlamov had to make some decent saves, especially in the second period while the Islanders were killing penalties, as well as in the final minutes. Generally though, while he faced 29 shots, he wasn’t tested with too many difficult chances.

The third line looked really good in the win and Oliver Wahlstrom had an excellent shot to open the scoring. He’s continuing to look more comfortable and now has three goals and six points in his last five games.

Tonight will mark the first game of a three-game series against the Buffalo Sabres. The Islanders have won every meeting of the season thus far, outscoring the Sabres 9-3 over their three games. It’s a great chance for New York to continue climbing the East Division standings and the Islanders should really be able to take a minimum of four points in this series.
