1) Flyers defenseman Erik Johnson spoke via Zoom with the local media on Thursday to talk about his decision to sign a one-year contract extension with the team. Johnson said that he understands he's no longer an every game player or likely to log major minutes (he's averaged 20-plus minutes of ice time for his career) when he plays. However, he still feels like he has the ability to contribute to the team, both on and off the ice. He relishes being a mentor to younger players and said that reaching Silver Stick status (1,000 career NHL games in the regular season) is a secondary consideration.
2) Flyers Daily: On the Friday edition of Flyers Daily, host Jason Myrtetus discusses the state of the rebuild based on what has -- and has not -- taken place so far this offseason. Other than the Cam Atkinson buyout, the departure of veteran defenseman Marc Staal (unrestricted free agent) and the arrival of highly touted prospect Matvei Michkov, the Flyers current roster is exactly the same as the one that was here at the end of last season. The next order of business is to either negotiate a long-term contract extension for Travis Konecny or to consider alternative options.
Jason also speaks with Flyers defense prospect Oliver Bonk. The 22nd overall pick of the 2023 Draft discusses his strong 2023-24 season for the OHL champion London Knights, his experiences at least year's and his second Development Camps, his goals for 2024-25 and more.
