30. Malcolm Subban
Got a lot of remarks yesterday following the blog on Subban. It seems that most believe Columbus will take LA's 2013 pick over 2012, and they are likely very right. For the sake of continuity, let's just say they
really like Malcolm Subban and take him this year. Cool?
Cool.
So let's set up the next scene.
Glen Sather approaches the podium. His New York Rangers a couple wins away from their first Stanley Cup in almost 20 years, so feelings in Ranger Nation are a mixed bag. Regardless, here he sits with the 29th pick, and a chance to grab a player his scouting staff feel very strongly about.
"With the Twenty-Ninth pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Rangers are proud to select:
Oscar Dansk."
'What a monster!' can be heard throughout the arena, as Pierre McGuire begins to rant and rave over the airwaves.
In Dansk, a team brings in a goaltender with size, athleticism and pedigree. The next big thing in Swedish goaltending, Oscar Dansk was in the US only a couple years ago with Shattuck before going back to his homeland. His play in the recent U-18 tournament really opening eyes as to what this Swede is capable of.
At six-foot-three, Dansk covers a lot of net from the get go. What scouts love about Dansk, however, is his cool and calm demeanor in the net. He plays a bit deeper than normal for more traditional butterfly goalies, but Dansk has such calculated and crisp movements in the net that allow for it. Some would say he allows the game to come to him.
Beyond his very clean technique, and controlled play to cover the net, Dansk has very quick feet and can recover quickly. His re-positioning is precise, and can make the second and third saves. He rarely gives them up, however, rarely letting out big rebounds.
His athleticism really shines through, as a very strong skater who often comes out to play the puck.
As I've mentioned before, I believe Dansk to be the best netminder available on June 22nd, but I doubt he goes first. He brings such a strong package to the table, it's hard to not get excited about a future career in the National Hockey League.
