Another Late Night Trade: Canucks and Penguins. Who wins this deal?

Trade

The dominoes continued to fall as another late-night mega-trade took place last night , this one between the Penguins and the Canucks….

First off, let me say that it’s amazing how many big trades are happening a full month ahead of the trade deadline. We often see trades within two weeks of the deadline, but to see this many multiplayer trades in late January is extremely rare.

In many ways, this trade was foreshadowed when the Canucks took back so little cap space for JT Miller.

So in case you were sleeping, here’s the trade….

The Canucks acquired defenceman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, the rights to forward Melvin Fernström, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from the New York Rangers).

The GM in Vancouver is of course Patrik Allvin. But let’s face it, this trade has team president Jim Rutherford written all over it…. Rutherford, 75, was the former GM of the Penguins. Throughout his entire career he has been known as one of the best horse traders in the business. Rutherford is especially specifically known for making player-for-player deals…. not just plater for draft pick deals. Rutherford is also famously known for making two trades at once, with the first trade setting up the second.

That being said, I’m sure Canucks Swedish GM Patrik Allvin definitely approves of having three Petterssons on his team. What’s up a moment of silence for the play-by-play guys.

It’s been many years since the Penguins have found themselves in this position and traded FOR a first-round pick. They are almost famously known for dumping first-round draft picks every year to upgrade for the playoffs.

What’s the next domino??

I’m told to look out for St. Louis. No further information yet, and I have to make a lot more calls. My source would only tell me the Blues are involved in some talks right now that are leaning towards getting something significant done in the very near future.

What’s the buzz?
Who do you believe wins this trade?
