On the plus side of this one, Austin Watson scored his 2nd of the year and 2nd goal in two games. However, a line from McLellan that continues to haunt the team, “first team to 3 wins”. Where Detroit was backstopped and saw a glut of goals on a small shot count against Utah, The Wings couldn’t keep the puck out of their net in Colorado. When the team took a 1-0 lead, it took 44 seconds to lose it and the Avs never looked back.

Last season, Lyon and Raymond were the work horses down the stretch. This year, Lyon isn’t anywhere near the consistent clutch lock down. The reality of a brutal final stretch does little to take the sting out of the roller coaster season. We all know good things are coming, but there are bad habits to still be broken.

The team can’t seem to string two wins together in a final stretch where they desperately do so. Losing Mrazek and Talbot both seems to compound the issue. Lyon may be losing ground in a weak UFA goalie market. Detroit has players coming up and coming in but at this point, far sooner than last year, the season is a wash. A much needed coaching change was implemented but far too late.

There are only so many ways to cover another loss in a “must win”, so I leave it to you in the comments. What McLellan got out of the group after his arrival was incredible. There was just no way to keep that type of momentum and when things go sideways bad habits slide back in.

1st Period goals:

JT Compher opened the scoring at 6:00 on the power play. After some back and forth passing with Edvinsson and Tarasenko, the puck goes down to Rasmussen standing beside the net. He finds Compher at the bumper spot for a quick snap shot. 1-0 DET

44 seconds later COL ties it 1-1

At 12:54 COL doubles the lead. 2-1 COL

Shots: 9-8 COL
Score: 2-1 COL

2nd Period goals:

At 4:39 Colorado scores the likely dagger shot. 3-1 COL

Shots: 20-16 COL 20-16 COL
Score: 3-1 COL 3-1 COL

3rd Period goals:

At 8:34 COL goes up 4-1.

At 16:53 Austin Watson scored his 2nd of the season and 2nd in two games. Edvinsson skated the puck into the zone, handed off to Compher who put a shot on net in tight and Watson sent the rebound in 4-2 COL

The reduced gap led to a goalie pull and of course Colorado goes up 5-2 at 17:56

Shots: 28-22 COL
Score: 5-2 COL
