The Leafs dominated the Flyers from start to finish last night, even though Philly scored the opening goal, they only managed 3 shots on net in the first period. The Leafs took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. Then the flood gates opened in the second period with 4 straight by Toronto.
Nylander and Tavares were clicking all night, each with 2 goals and 2 assists.Tavares now has a 4 game point streak (5G, 4A).
Nylander the king of consistency, last 3 seasons goal output 40-40-40. His next one will be a career best. The 120 goals last three seasons has him with the 9th most goals in the NHL in that span. (Matthews 3rd with 136)
The win allowed the Leafs to climb into a first place tie with Florida (Leafs with the tiebreaker with a better ROW). Toronto's magic number is now down to single digits, at 9 points to clinch a playoff spot.
Next up for Toronto is a California trip. Kings are one of the hottest teams in the league winning 9 of their past 10, they have the Avs before Leafs visit. San Jose tomorrow night, L.A. Saturday and Anaheim Sunday, before returning home to face the Panthers on April 2nd. Leafs and Panthers will meet twice in three games, with a Columbus speed bump for Toronto inbetween.
Tampa remains two points behind (cue Def Leppard two steps behind). The Lightning bulldozed the Penguins 6-1 to keep pace. The Canadian contingent of Cirelli (2), Hagel and Point combined for four goals.
I will be back tomorrow morning to tee up Lafs and the Baby Sharks and maybe some Jays and O's.
