Since we know Halak and Greiss perform on good teams, perhaps the blame should be the defense?

The argument of the goalies being mostly to blame due to their save percentage is a hopelessly flaccid one as it's quite obvious that a goalie's save percentage is directly linked to his team's ability to defend. Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought this was commonly understood. If you're gonna make an argument that it's on the goalies, perhaps present their GSAA numbers or at least have some manner of statistical measure that shows they're posting those sub-par numbers despite facing an average number of chances from high danger area.

My point isn't that they can't post good numbers, it's that statistical measure exists to determine whether the goalies are actually at fault or not. Considering your affinity for statistical measure in other analyses, I'm just suggesting that it's odd for you to not support your case with them. GSAA and chances from the slot and the ability for the PK to suppress high danger and cross-ice passes (Edmonton's problem) would all actually support your case. Instead, you kinda just leave it as a backhanded insult towards a team's goalies without evidence that it isn't as much or more on the team as a whole.

The Islanders goaltending sucks. Just like Talbot sucks this year. Do you really need analytics to see that? Or do you think the Oilers D is to blame for Talbot having a down year?

Talbot has sucked the life out of the Oilers this year. The Leafs defense is average at best but Andersen keeps them in it.
The Oilers get burned on cross crease passes alot so maybe Talbot should stop the pass or get across quicker.
And all those first shot goals, make a save for (frank) sake.
