Hey James,
The wife is pushing for us to get an outdoor rink for the kids next year. I was hoping you could give some advice.
1) what would be a descent size rink to get? I have a large yard but NHL size is out of the question
2) any tips on taking care of the ice besides keeping it shoveled?
3) will I need any special tools? sorry but a Zamboni is not in the budget.
Thanks James

My rink is about 20 x 40 ish......you really learn a lot when you do it, but for me, the main thing is you don't want to fill it too much when it's not very cold out. It's not minus ten C min. you've got to add in layers.
As for taking care of the ice, just shovel and flood. Once you've got a base, all you really need to do is basically just wet it enough to take the skate marks out. I sometimes get litttle pockets of bad ice, which i just chip away and fix with slush.
When it's bumpy, hit it with hot water.
The only tools I needed were a drill, a level, a stapler (for stapling the plastic to the wood) a shovel and a hose.
