Bill, why do they rarely update the players info. Height weight and what not? Just curious.

Truthfully, because it kind of slips through the cracks. If Brian Smith gets updated info from the hockey staff, he puts it in the camp roster and media guide. More commonly, no one provides him the info. And even if Brian does get it, someone on the digital side needs to update it on the website, too, and there are usually a half-dozen more pressing and immediate things to tend to each day so it gets bumped down the priority list. Although I submit copy roughly 4 or 5 times per week, I do not have CMS access or else I would just update any heights/ weights that I know have changed.

The fact that he admits he is not back to what he was before injuries, the fact that he is being asked to move to wing (less lateral movements, less stop and go type stress on knees), his age, and the fact that we have so many young D all suggests his chances as a NHL D man are very likely over. Else, no way Flyers put a guy of his size and potential skill set in this position.

On the roster at wing, we have Giroux, Lindblom, Bee, JVR, Raffl and possibly Laughton ahead of him. Thus, I see this as a chance to be at best a 4LW down the line, and give a chance to a kid who has had bad luck and battled gamely. He is competing with Twarynski, Wisdom et all for the depth chart spot behind Raffl.

There is no difference in lateral movement or stop and go between playing forward or defense.

Don’t think you’re going to need to. The team thinks so highly of Morin’s ability that he’s been told outright that he has zero chance of making this team as a defenseman; the position he’s been training to play for the last, what, 9 years. I’m having a hard time understanding the point of this whole thing? Were the Flyers hoping he would just retire when he was told this? Do they really think they are helping Morin’s career with this move? Why not just let the guy compete for a spot at d? Why make a sideshow of this? Seems kind of embarrassing.

So I guess tomorrow or Monday we find out who is in Group A and who is Group B. Since they are scrimmaging, probably going to be divided up evenly with a mix of NHL and hopefuls.

It seems to me it is the Nellies and skeptics who are making a big deal of it. I am happy for his opportunity of course, but would like to wait and see it before discussing it further.

He has been a trooper. He has taken adversity well. This is their going the extra mile in reciprocity and acknowledgement...an extra mile towards an exit.

And BS about needing a big winger against the Isles. Isles handled Caps, with Tom Wilson. Isles were handled by Bolts, with Palat and Kucherov as those huge, big bodied (sarcasm) tormentors in wings.

There are too many zeroes in this story to add up to anything positive.

Chances are he will be coaching in 2-3 years time.

I felt this way at first too. He seems like a good kid. The more I think about it, though, the more I feel like it would be more respectful to just give the guy an honest shot to make it as a defenseman.

He went from having a 0% chance of making the team on D to a 0.1% chance of making it as a forward, basically. He might even have a hard time cracking LHV's d corps.

Maybe a future as a Derek Boogaard is pretty much the only thing left for him at this point.

I think you guys over-value our D.

After Provorov, there's certainly a lot of room for improvement.
We need some "Nastiness" back there, and in my opinion, we really haven't had that for a few years.

Are we talking about this year or in the future? His best bet to have a career in hockey, whether at the NHL or AHL level is at defense in my opinion.

We don't need nastiness. We need skill, speed, puck movement along with solid defensive play.

Morin is more skilled and talented then some are giving him credit for. He obviously is in tough to make the Flyers. He does provide the Flyers a missing element that may come in handy in the type of format they are about to play....can he make the switch at this point of his career ? Sure he can. I still think he’ll need some more time in the ‘A’ to get accustomed but he may start the year as part of the taxi squad and from there....who knows? But if the Flyers didn’t have faith in the player they wouldn’t keep him around just because he’s a nice kid and a solid team mate.
