Karine Hains: Flexibility Needed for the Future Kent Hughes finally spoke to the media, and he pretty much stayed the course, nothing new on Price, still trying to trade Petry and he wants flexibility for the future.

I think they could've waited to do a press conference, clearly Hughes didn't have anything new to talk about lol

Exciting couple of weeks for Sens fans.

Good for them.

Another 2-3 years before we get there....

it might sound like a harsh thing to say but clearly that organization is now benefiting from Melnyk passing away... all of a sudden there's a bunch of money to spend.

Yeah, I think I posted something to that earlier int he week.

The kids decided to open the purse strings, let the hockey people manage the team, and they went out and got that new arena land deal.

I think they want to sell, but also, make sure the team stays in Ottawa as a legacy to their father... so ensuring the foundation is there.

Regardless, a good time to be a Sens fan... I am sure I will not hear the end of it from my nephews for the next few years...

yup, that might be the only instance where I'd "cheer" for the sens. love the fact that they dumped Murray in TOR lol, should make for interesting games, even though the laffs are still the more talented team.

I'd be more than OK with the Habs not making the playoffs again, but watching the Sens making it and knocking out the Leafs in the first round.

how long before the team moves away from Kanata to downtown, is there a timeline?

There was no date, but I cannot see it happening (if it does) in less than 3+ years.

oh, I thought the decision had already been made official. it should've been done a looooong time ago, as a matter of fact the arena should've never been there in the first place, what a dumb location....

The Melnyk kids need to prop up the value of the franchise before they sell it to new owner's ... at least that's what I would do.

I think they got the right to the land (for the second time) just a few months back, now they have to do something.

So they gotta plan it, design it then build it.

Hopefully the original plans can be mostly used and tweaked, rather than starting from scratch.

Gonna be a while.

it makes sense, it's much more enticing to buy a sports team when it's competitive and also has a logical emplacement for their arena, making it easier for fans to attend games.

I see, they're still in the very early stages then. at least in the meantime the product on the ice should be better.

...

That is good cap management, you don’t overspend when you can’t win the big prize, you save up and when you feel the timing is right, you pounce. Clearly, the time is not now for the Habs and Hughes has said that even if he was to move Petry, he wouldn’t be trying to sign any of the big time free agents such as Kadri, but he didn’t shut the door on depth additions.

Nice to have some smart people again in the GM's office.

Yeah, As KH said, really looking at what Stevie Y has done in Detroit as an example of how they want to push through... but just faster, I think.

well I guess every team would want to evolve faster and become competitive again, but there a whole lot of things that need to go well in order for that to happen, without overspending for UFAs and messing up your salary cap again for years to come.

not fond of the "senators getting better while the leafs are basically taking a step back" conversation?
