Karine Hains: What Went Wrong with the Canadiens Following Kent Hughes’ declaration last Thursday about Carey Price, the star netminder has been the talk of the town and of social media.

bad cap management, bad drafting, bad player development.

Bergy had finally figured out you build through the draft, albeit too late for him. Particularly in a market such as Montreal. New management is doing a stellar job acquiring top end picks with an eye to a couple of years down the road, optimism is on the horizon. GHG

The year I completely lost it was when the Habs were gearing up for the playoffs and Bergevin went for Dwight King, Andreas Martinsen and Steve Ott at the deadline.

Lucky Seattle didn't pick Price in the expansion draft. Dodged a bullet on that one.

They should've drafted Kopitar.

And Price aint the best of "this" generation.

missed opportunity for kraken fans, they could've lived all the excitement behind Price's mysterious day-to-day status, and not knowing if he's ever coming back.

meh, the difference was the team in front of them, not necessarily the goalies themselves.

I've heard more habs fans complaining about Price rather than being a fan of his and defending him.

LOL put Fleury with the teams Price has had, not only does he win nothing no cups but he has a lot more breakdowns under pressure. Come on.

Exactly Fleury is nowhere in this conversation if you take away Crosby, Geno and Letang. Seeing him as the best of his generation is just ridiculous.

yeah, Fleury can be very polarizing in a way, some perceive him as being among the league's best goalies ever, others seem to think they won in PIT despite him being in net lol... the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Hains: What Went Wrong with the Canadiens

Here is what went wrong.

MB never had a plan - either to draft and develop properly, how to manage the cap so you can put a quality team together, or build relationships that encourage players to come to Montreal.

He had blind spots to the holes in his roster (that he created with bad player / asset management) and never found ways to fill them (because he (frank)ed himself over with the cap or was in a desperate position and would have had to overpay for anything - if those players even wanted to come to MTL as UFA or had NMC)..

Everything MB did was completely reactionary.

Including the trash-bin pickups that did not last more than a few weeks in MTL, because he could not do better elsewhere.

HuGo, on the other hand, are getting poop does the right way. They are the complete antithesis of MB.

That does not mean they will win the cup or get everything 100% right, but it means this will be a solid team with a good foundation and prospects.

'Bout (frank)ing time.

great goalie with a loaded team in front of him for most of his career. Can't say the same about Price.

fans have to be patient though, HuGo are taking the longer road with the higher chances of sustainable success. 2-3 more years before the Habs are competitive again. Let's all hope they can get another high pick next year, top 3 would be awesome with some luck (or bribe to Bettman)

As far as I am concerned, HuGo can take 5 years...

Just get the team back on track, build that foundation, and always have a pipeline so that you can move guys that might get too expensive for younger guys to help manage your cap.

I love Gallagher, and I hope he is always a Hab, but if the Habs had talent in the minors/system to replace him, they should have traded him to a contender for the cap space before being forced to sign him to that contract.

That is how you need to manage cap.
