The Carolina Hurricanes fell in the first half of their back-to-back set, losing 4-0 to the Washington Capitals tonight.
There wasn’t a ton of action in the opening frame, with the teams combining for just 14 shots overall. However, Carolina got into some penalty trouble and Evgeny Kuznetsov opened the scoring on a 5-on-3 power play, putting a nice shot past a screened Frederik Andersen.
The Capitals took over in the first half of the second period, and midway through the frame, Martin Fehervary took a pass from Conor Sheary to score, increasing the lead. Then after Carolina couldn’t stay out of the box, Alex Ovechkin one-timed a shot past Andersen later in the period to extend the Capitals’ lead and send Washington into the second intermission up 3-0.
The Hurricanes came out strong in the third period, outshooting Washington 17-9. Despite a much stronger frame though, Carolina couldn’t beat Vitek Vanecek and a late goal from Dmitry Orlov secured a 4-0 win for Washington
Carolina was outplayed through the first 40 minutes and while they did put together a stronger final period it was too little, too late.
Penalties were a major issue for the Hurricanes, giving the Capitals six power plays to work with. When you’re playing shorthanded for that large of a chunk of the game, it’s going to be difficult to generate consistent offense.
It was also a fun coincidence that the two teams met tonight, given that the Capitals were announced as Carolina's opponent for the 2023 Stadium Series earlier today.
The Hurricanes are right back in action tomorrow and will look to snap their two-game losing streak, facing the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first game of their four-game homestand.
